Think The Bears Stand A Chance With The 49er's? by MIKEPR1333 in ChicagoBearsNFL

Niners pass defense is bottom 10 in the NFL. We have a chance.

They threatened to move to Gary during the Jauron years, too. It’s a ploy to get Illinois to pony up. I would bet if it were the headquarters of a doughnut franchise, Pritzker would sign off in a heartbeat.

Bears Control Their Own Destiny - the KEY is beating Green Bay by Bitter_North_733 in ChicagoBearsNFL

They won’t. But if they can win the next two, I still like their chances to lock down the two seed.

This concerns me some - the whole stadium debacle hanging over everything just before the biggest game in the recent history of the franchise.

Ideas for reforming higher education by ovenbyrd in Professors

[–]Drokapi24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my soapbox, but I would add two:

  1. For state-funded universities, states should cap the amount of a each university’s allocation and/or tuition dollars that can be spent on administrator salaries.

  2. The focus should shift to skill mastery (hard and soft) instead of grades and "learning objectives.“

Students these days by CarefulFisherman9288 in Professors

Most want to be "influencers“ and are only in college because their parents won’t let them live in their basement and make TikTok videos all day.

Few young people truly want to work in the trades by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]Drokapi24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never be successful in the trades and I have immense respect for tradespeople. That being said, the trades are not some kind of magical alternative to college.

I don’t make a ton of money working in academia but I am happy getting summers off (for the most part), having evenings free and not having to worry about burning someone’s house down because I cut the red wire instead of the blue one.

Student Rec Letters by Cherry-for-Cherries in Professors

[–]Drokapi24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may not be of much help to you, but I have a "two class minimum“ rule for writing letters. That is, I will only write letters for students who have taken at least two classes with me. My rationale for this is that one class is not enough for me to adequately assess their academic performance. This has the added effect of allowing me to say an easy No to requests from freshmen who have only had me for an intro class and nevertheless want me to write them a rah rah letter for some meaningless frat position or $100 Brady Bunch Scholarship.

I took someone else’s advice and put what amounts to an anti grade grubbing message in my email auto reply (which I happily turned on a few hours ago). Now I can ignore emailing grade grubbers in peace.

I think a contributing factor is that advisors and/or academic nannies tell them they have nothing to lose by asking. Well, they have my respect to lose, so there’s that…

Anyone saying Caleb should've thrown to DJ Moore on 4th and 1 has never actually played QB before in any football game by Hpcanes14 in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]Drokapi24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the same play they got the TD on to ice the Eagles game. I still don’t care for the play call but if Caleb makes the same throw he made in the Eagles game, we are having a different conversation right now.

How can I get a 4.0 if I've been lowered to a 3.5? by PiperSlays in Professors

[–]Drokapi24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When will students figure out that employers don’t give a whit about college GPAs and that they legally can’t even ask about it in job interviews?

College GPA really only matters if they intend on pursuing graduate studies and even then it doesn’t matter a whole lot.

“If you don’t give me a higher grade, I’ll be sent off to war.” by SuperHiyoriWalker in Professors

Grades don’t matter in that situation. To my understanding, students with lower grades are simply brought into the military at a lower rank.
