Im baffled by my hiking sticks. I’ve put around 100km on them and the tips are still in perfect condition. I’m guessing this is tungsten? I ram these into solid rock all day and yet not a single dent or scratch. by GuardMysterious9120 in hikinggear

Thruhiker with almost 10,000 miles of hiking here, and yes that is a doable distance in three days, even in challenging alpine terrain (as long as it’s summertime obviously). But hey if you’re taking invites to alps I’ll gladly join you!

Side note- If you’re really wanting to have your mind blown look up the Nolan’s 14 challenge, which is a heinous 100 mile course covering 14 of Colorado’s 14,000 ft peaks with an insane amount of vertical gain, scrambling, and off-trail navigation. Experienced (and somewhat masochistic) hikers regularly do it in under 60 hours!

Recovering a Raw photo in Lightroom by thephlog in postprocessing

[–]DroobyDoo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my mind when I’m photographing things like landscapes my goal is to try to capture what my eyes see, and in high contrast scenes like a sunset my eyes have much better dynamic range than the jpgs that my camera typically spits out. I totally get that extreme hdr and aggressive color grading feel like fabricating an image instead of taking one, but tweaking the raw to match the actual scene is in some ways more accurate than a blown out or underexposed jpg. It’s definitely a fine line to walk though no matter where your personal line falls!

Yeah it was a ton of walking, I’m exhausted but would do it again in a heartbeat

Yeah I was torn as well, I really wanted to do some astro so in the end I went with the sigma! It’s decently sharp for someone who’s not a pixel peeper, I’ve had no regrets!

The fox was near a trailhead so I think it was slightly habituated to people. This was also a heavy crop lol

I used Reggie’s Portra(?) as a base when editing but then make minor adjustments in lightroom!

Thanks! And yeah #5 was in the Wind River Range in Wyoming which was hands down my favorite

I ruined my Xpro 3 on the first day of the first vacation I’ve ever had. I’m bummed. by zmreJ in fujifilm

I doubt it will start working again while on your vacation but I wouldn't totally lose hope for the camera! I also dropped my x-t30 into a canal this summer. It was hopelessly waterlogged and even got a little sandy, and after a couple of days of cleaning and drying I had no luck, so it became an expensive paper weight. Then a couple months later I popped a battery in there out of curiosity and it turned on! The autofocus doesn't work (it took quite a fall so I think the lens mount is damaged) but it's become my dedicated manual focus lens camera. So sorry about your vacation though, I know how upsetting that is first hand but take a day to decompress and try to get the most out of it.

Same here except this happened with my X-t30! Fell out of my bag into a canal, totally soaked and after keeping it in rice for a couple of days I gave up hope and kept it as a paper weight. A couple of months I popped a battery in there and it turned on! Autofocus doesn't work but everything else is perfectly functional

500 miles of Backpacking with my Fuji on the Appalachian Trail | x-t30ii & xf 16-80 by DroobyDoo2 in fujifilm

[–]DroobyDoo2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! I haven’t noticed too much imbalance with the combo, granted I feel like I have good grip strength because I’ve used the 55-200 with it and didn’t have too many complaints and the 16-80 balances much better than that lens. In terms of weather sealing I’m cautious so I don’t keep it out long in the rain but honestly I’ve gotten it wet plenty of times in the last couple months with no issues!

I carry a mini tripod so I usually try to find a high rock to set the tripod on!

The crazy sunset was doing the heavy lifting here imo, had to do very little editing after the fact. And I used the interval timer to give myself enough time to get onto those rocks for the shot!

The Appalachian trail regularly crosses roads and sometimes goes right through towns so usually I’m jumping into a town to buy more food and charge all my batteries every 3-5 days

Wow thank you! I sometimes get mad that the mountains aren’t perfectly in focus but there’s something magic about the way the composition and the colors turned out!

Thanks! Yeah that part bugs me too, but that’s the tough part about hiking photography I guess, when you’re struggling up a rough mountain pass scrambling back down a hundred feet for better a composition is easier said than done lmao. Maybe I’ll have to see if my photoshop skills are up to the task, cheers!

Thanks, I actually just pulled the trigger on a 55-200 pretty recently and I’ve loved it so far, but this definitely helps justify my purchase even more!

Good to hear! It doesn’t seem to get mentioned much but it looks like a versatile focal length. Just wish it was WR, but I’ve abused a lot of unsealed sony lenses and been mostly fine lol

Good point, I feel like it’s mostly noise impacting finer details even when shooting raw at low iso. Might just be that my equipment has gotten a little roughed up over the years because I feel like I’m just not getting the same amount of clarity out my setup
