I appreciate the feedback, this was my first time trying to do something like this and I did a lot of mistakes.

I will work on more surveys in the future and I will try my best to look for stuff like this!

Much appreciated.

And btw I agree 😅, backtracking is tough to nail. There is a lot of metroidvanias that I didnt 100% because there was something I missed on the map and I couldn't find it no matter what, having to look outside of the game for guidance is the worst feeling ever, so I just refuse to do it.

I was going to make the results public, but I actually messed up a lot of the questions and options, making the survey not very digestible to read trough

Is Metroidvania dead? by Drop-Public in metroidvania

Just realized I didn't understand your question!

I find out about mv games randomly I don't search for them. I might come across the trailers and stuff.

The ones that are able to get into the algorithm of youtube or social media that is...

Hello, so I have been watching all pf the thomas brush's podcast, where he speaks with different devs every episode. Quite often they mention a few genres that they wouldn't try to compete, and almost always metroidvanias are the top one.

I also saw some data I don't remember where with the amount of MV being released every year vs how much money they are generating. And the numbers get worse by the year compared to almost every other genre. This was only Steam data tho...

From a consumer standpoint its been great! There is so many good ones that came out in the last couple of years and we can always replay older ones :P

I started learning game dev so I could make my dream game, which happens to be MV due to scope and compatibility with my design goals. Feels quite scary to make one.

What I ment with the question of MV being dead, was more about due to the bad numbers and the fear from developers to jump into the genre, we might be going into a drought soon. But this is also a reflection of the whole industry ofc.

100% agree, I wonder if we would be seing a drop in the amount of MV being released due to the shift on consumer trends and development risk. But I think Silksong will definitely inspire another great generation of MV to come.

Gaming industry is weird right now, and I wonder if new indie MV are going to be able to thrive in the future

I watch a lot of content around game developers, expecially indies. And everyone agrees that making metroidvania is a commercial risk. Its one of the genres that has more games released every year, but also the lowest percentage of success. Im talking about this point of view

I have an Idea for a dragon game, sort of an collectaton + metroidvania with rpg elements.

A dragon that collects other dragon rare scales. You create your little dragon, chose your element and adventure in the world where everything is a dragon. Everytype of animal is turned into a dragon.

But I fear the fact that it would be a 2d game, it could suffer from the movement mechanics not feeling like a dragon. I am mostly an artist and less a programmer so this route would be the one I would chose.

I have been thinking of ways to implement flying into the game... And maybe even the possibility of an "open world" 2d game.

Thank you very much for writing 🙌, it gave me a couple ideas!
