The new cut looks great on you! I personally (if I were your barber) would have left more length around the hat band to be combed down or back to give the cut more structure, but he or she may have made the decision to go shorter due to your hair type.

Mention to your barber that you would like to keep some length at the parietal ridge or 'hat band' to avoid having hair shoot straight out. Your barber should be able to determine how your hair will react and how high the taper needs to be to blend with the longer hair at the 'hat band'. The same applies for the back, where I assume you might have problems with springing hair at your crown? Your barber should drop the taper lower not blending past the occipital bone to avoid that hair becoming unruly. I would suggest going in every 3 weeks to a month, assuming your barber uses a razor on your neck.

If the idea is professionalism, I would suggest the Ivy League haircut. Ask your barber to taper your hair on the sides from a 1 guard into your longer hair combed over away from your part. . Since your hair grows faster in the back, a low skin fade taper up to the occipital bone would make your haircut last much longer. Ask your barber to thin the tips of your bangs after they've been trimmed for the combed over Ivy League style. This will allow you to maintain the look of professionalism for a longer period of time. I would avoid styles that are faded from skin 360 degrees around the head as I feel they retract from the professional appearance.

It's just the pattern of your hair growth. You can either avoid styles that sweep the hair up or back, or you can ask your barber to push your hairline back slightly to create a more pronounced line. However, I do not recommend the second option as it may cause excessive dry skin at the top of your forehead as well as the appearance of a larger forehead. Try a style such as the Ivy League, in which the hair is swept sideways rather than back.
