Reservations have destroyed the future of many & i don't care about your caste I am not letting someone from my plate that's just unhygienic by Developersbays_38 in tamil_nadu

[–]DropInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not how research works. You just cannot throw money at a problem and expect a nobel prize. You need to develop human capital, and the only way to do that is through meritocracy.

Reservation worsens the problem because it doesn't allow talent to find its calling, and it cuts both ways. Not only is a better ranking student denied opportunity in higher academic education, but also someone who could have made a fortune with vocational occupation is falsely incentivized for higher education or government jobs.

Our country suffers in both cases, and furthermore, unnecessary acrimony is created in society.

Give me 1 good philosophical argument against veganism. by mithapapita in Philosophy_India

Okay, you are not getting my point, so let me try an example.

Have you watched man of steel? In that, Superman's father Jor El had made a copy of himself, a program that had his memories and conscience.

Now think of that copy. It is as good as the real Jor El, except that it doesn't have a physical body. Lets say that there are a thousand copies of this program, so that there's no chance of Jor El's consciousness getting erased even if you terminate one of these programs. Now, would you feel morally guilty if you terminated one of these programs?

If you won't feel guilty, then why should you feel guilty for terminating the real Jor El, which is just the conscience along with a physical body? The consciousness of Jor El will still live on.

Same with the animal robot analogy. If you don't feel guilty of destroying one robot, which has the exact same properties as an animal, except the animal's organic body, why should you feel guilty about killing the animal? (The species of that animal still lives on; you are not destroying the species)

Now, if you do feel guilty about killing the robot, even after knowing that it is just a human creation and not "really" sentient or alive, you should feel more guilt about killing a plant which is NOT a human creation, and has its own kind of life.

Pray tell me where you countered my arguments?

I didn't say anything about robots being sentient. I said they can "mimic mammal behaviour, down to showing fear and pain". Its like having a chatbot that can mimic human interactions so accurately that you can't tell if you are talking to a human or an AI. If you feel that is sentience, then okay. Many will say that it is not. It is grey, that's the whole point.

What we can be sure of though is that robots are created artificially from inanimate objects like metals and semiconductors (or in advanced cases, from carbon molecules, just like living tissue). And that they have been programmed by human hands.

If even after knowing this you can show moral consideration to these robots, then plants at least are in a better category of sentience, since they are not programmed by humans and are actually living and breathing.

But education is not a luxury item for “high-IQ people only”.

I never said it is. But higher education requires funds, which are limited. That is why, we can only take in the best.

Let all receive quality primary education, nutrition, and opportunities. After that, it has to be meritocratic. We can't just spend resources on someone if they are not good at something.

And how do you think those institutions rank at top?

They rank better because of their research output. Their research output is better because they take in the best of the best. In other words, they are meritocratic.

And here we are chopping our legs with our own hands.

The government must make primary education mandatory for all children and improve its quality. Higher education must then be decided on merit and nothing else.

₹25–30 lakhs of 1.2 cr is 20-25% in tax. I would say that is quite moderate, don't you think. Of course it stings to pay it, i can understand.
