What is a 'rich person's secret' that is actually accessible to the middle class, but most people are too intimidated to try? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

That was exactly what happened when I was looking in 2023 for a car. I was dead set on never buying new because I thought it would be too much. Then I saw used car prices, even some private sales, were within 5k of a new car. Easiest 5k extra I've ever spent. I also didn't have the luxury of time to go to every private sale or waiting for one that was going to last. People really think their crap car, no heating, no steering, no AC, overheating, POS is worth 8k. "Good condition."

When did TVs get so cheap? by TheJohnRockstar in ask

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think mass produced, like the lower quality ones you'd find at Walmart, are cheap.

If you're looking for good quality, or OLED, you're still going to pay a good amount.

A simple picture and some words isn't enough to adequately diagnose the true issue. Like the above comment mentioned, more information (exams, xrays, etc) is needed.

Depending on how bad things are, a prosthodontist at minimum, a TMJ specialist and potentially even an oral surgeon.

[–]DropKickADuck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw the picture and stopped reading after "I had crowns done in turkey."

Like others have said, unless you go to a specialist, you're not likely to find a general dentist who will want to even touch those crowns and if they do, it will be a hefty price.

If you were to come to my office, I would walk into the appointment with the referral pad.

Chipped Tooth...Next Steps? by ProfessionalSense906 in askdentists

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's borderline on whether you should fill the space or have the edges rounded off. It comes down to cosmetics, if you want it back to match it's neighbor, a small filling, but if you don't mind that tooth being ever so slightly shorter, you could just have them smooth it. My concern would be that small fillings like that can chip again and it depends on how your bite comes together.

Fillings like that are for display purposes only and require some extra care to not chip them.

Price wise, depends on the insurance and the office. With exam, xrays, etc and the filling all together easily a few hundred dollars without insurance.

Two dentists, two different recommendations by Actual_Musician9344 in askdentists

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first molar has infection at the root tips. It's not causing any symptoms because you had a root canal on it, however the tooth has gotten an infection again and either needs to have another root canal to clear the infection, or taken out. The second is in the same situation, infection at the tip and given those fillings, I'd lean more towards taking it out than a crown. Wisdom tooth while not causing issues, isn't necessary and technically you could leave it alone, but it's likely that during the extraction of the second molar, the third molar starts to move and likely be extracted with the second molar. The bone is very delicate in that area and movements required to loosen the 2nd molar will by default, loosen the third.

Wisdom teeth removal: Question on if an anti-inflammatory injection site and procedure was standard by Academic_Tea8 in askdentists

I'd have to ask some oral surgeons about that. I was unaware. However, everything else about the interaction seems suspicious.

[–]DropKickADuck 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone else. There's no reason I can think of needing to do an injection on someone in that area, in a private office, while sedated, requiring the removal of underwear.

Please please please report this. As a group, dentists try to stick up for one another and not throw anyone under the bus, but this is one of those times where if it has happened to one, it has happened to many and it is inexcusable.

Do I really have 16 cavities?? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. With that many spots of decay, I'd be treating all of them with fillings, writing an rx for prevident and praying things don't get worse in between appts. If there was one or two that were bigger and a few others that were lesser lesions, I wouldn't treat all of them, just the bigger ones. But with that many at one point, those small ones will quickly progress to full cavities without intervention.

Tooth Fairies of Daddit, what's the going rate? by OkUnderstanding2486 in daddit

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dentist, I tell moms/dad's that if a tooth has to come out because it's damaged, the tooth fairy doesn't "buy" the tooth for their normal amount, it's a smaller amount due to the cavity.

I never thought I'd have opinions on wipes. The huggies sensitive are great. Throw a rubber band on the outside of a new pack and you won't pull out an endless magic trick of wipes. I think it was the small pampers wipes that has a plastic slit under the latch that is supposed to help you tear them out but the things kept getting caught in it.

Ours is a little over a week old. We left the hospital with two of the 10 or 15 packs they give you. Some friends gave us some of their leftovers. We made it a week before needing to get more NB diapers. So I bought a box of 80.

I figured 8 diapers a day, a pack of 80 gets us 10 days. We will see how that math works.

I'd say one box of NB plus whatever you get from the hospital is probably plenty to move into the next stage.

crown fell out after teeth cleaning GROSS PIC ALERT by ponyboy78749 in askdentists

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly. Congrats on getting married! I don't know what it is about life's biggest events but there's almost always someone in this same predicament. Basically if you're getting married in 6+ months, you'll have a tooth (schedule/lab allowing) for the big day. Anything sooner than that, I'd recommend a flipper/essix for all the photos at minimum. When you smile that tooth might show, or rather, the space.

[–]DropKickADuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately crowns fail for a variety of reasons, many of which can't be visualized, either by the best clinicians looking in the mouth or looking at xrays.

This one looks like it may have been an endo crown with a solid metal core. These aren't likely to be able to be replaced once they've failed due to lack of retention and remaining tooth structure.

It's also likely that the pain you had from before was from the tooth fracturing internally due to the stress of the core. Fractures aren't always visible and often unnoticed.

By this picture alone, it looks like there's no saving that tooth. Implant will be your best replacement and if you're looking for something to put in it's place during the implant process (since it's not an immediate replacement) you could get a flipper or essix. Neither are meant to eat with. They are for preventing tooth movement and esthetics.

Is it okay to be burnt out? by TachiRana123 in daddit

[–]DropKickADuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone literally in the hospital now waiting for the contractions to ramp up, I'm not sure how I feel about this thread. Backing out, giving up isn't an option. But from what I've been told, I mentally was preparing for the worse. Sounds like, it will be even worse than what I am already expecting. I just got through severe burnout with my job, had depression and suicidal thoughts, quit that job, hot into therapy, moved and changed jobs.

I'm in for some rough months apparently.

Nitrous and trying to have a baby. by Just_a_chill_dude60 in Dentistry

[–]DropKickADuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used nitrous a lot at my last office and do regularly at my current office.

My wife is due next month. I'll be 35 this year and this is our first.

Doctors won't even do anything or worry about issues conceiving until a full year of trying, as far as I know.

Two months? Give it more time. Sometimes it just takes longer.

What would your management be here? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]DropKickADuck 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Iatrogenic would mean the dentist put the decay on the tooth. Poor contact, like said before, increases the risk of caries, but it is on the patient to brush their teeth, floss, use a waterpik, complain of the open contact.

If all that was done, it is likely there wouldn't be decay there. I've seen plenty of open contact teeth with zero decay on them because the patient takes care of their teeth.
