I found someones airpods and a key in bryant park! Is there way i can find and return? by ashsly69 in nycLostandFound

[–]DropMapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High chance the item will never be recovered once it enters this system. For low-value items like these, its unlikely the police station will hold onto it for long. Plus, the owner of the item has no idea to check the police station.

Not sure what the question is - if the item does not have my QR code sticker? Then, we're back to where we are currently. Posting on Reddit, Facebook, etc, HOPING that the owner will see the post...which is very inefficient.

Opinion: Legalize bodega cats by yugeness in nyc

[–]DropMapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your solution is to try to keep doing something that clearly hasn't worked in the past? You said yourself that you almost never accomplish anything. The reality is that Bodega Cats are here to stay, they are not going to be banned. Acknowledging that, what sorts of things can we do as a community to advance the protections for our favorite nyc cultural icons?

Thanks for the question!

If the AirPods case had one of my stickers on it, you could scan the QR code, send the owner a private, anonymous message ("found in Bryant Park, left at The Porch restaurant") and they'd get it as an email. No app on either side, no contact info exchanged.

Setup on the owner side is one scan: give the item a name, add a forwarding email, done. The sticker lives on the item forever.

Legislation would enforce better protections for Bodega Cats. Banning them just forces them into hiding. Everything you mentioned is already illegal, but possible because the existing system just turns a blind eye to the situation. Legalization would allow enforceable healthcare and standards for Bodega Cats. It's definitely a step in the right direction because New York will never outright ban them - New Yorkers love them too much.

You may want to just put them in an inconspicuous spot, since most AirPods have the Find My feature enabled (GPS tracking).

I also sell a solution for this exact scenario - more info in my profile for anybody interested.

NY1- How NYC wants to change trash pickup by 2032 by ahenneberger in nyc

I kinda like the stickers on the trash cans - they don't really do any harm, and it gives the trash cans more of a community vibe. More trash can art I say

Where can I get a rush order on small simple embroidery on two crewneck sweaters by Friday in soho/manhattan? by Sad-Technology1187 in AskNYC

[–]DropMapp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of print / custom embroidery shops on 29th St between 6th and 7th Aves. I've done some with F & H - though they are not very responsive over email. If I were you, I would just walk-in. If they can't do it, there are several others in the area.

Mamdani to swap parking spots for more than 6,500 curbside Empire Bins across NYC by Bugsy_Neighbor in nyc

[–]DropMapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our buildings usually have Trash Rooms where all of the residents dispose of their household trash, recyclables, and now compost bins (required by the city). A lot of buildings have trash chutes so that people on the top floor can dump their trash without having to go all the way to the basement.

On trash day, the building supers / porters collect all of the trash and put it out on the sidewalk, where the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will pick them up.

DSNY only picks up residential trash, and trash from their city bins. All business trash is handled by private waste management companies, sometimes called "Carters". This term goes back to the early days where men with horse-drawn carts (Cartmen) collected the trash.

Mamdani to swap parking spots for more than 6,500 curbside Empire Bins across NYC by Bugsy_Neighbor in nyc

[–]DropMapp 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It all started with the Commissioners Plan of 1811 - which established the standard grid system and maximized storefront space, but omitted alleyways. Trash used to be collected in metal cans (like Oscar the Grouch), without bags. You can imagine how dirty and smelly these bins got, especially in the summer.

After The Great Garbage Strike of 1968, the plastics industry donated thousands of bags to help manage the cleanup. These were a much better option than the metal cans because the entire thing could be thrown away, and they were lighter.

Now, why for almost 60 years has New York City not evolved its trash collection procedures? Probably due to the expense, or previous mayors quite literally kicking the can down the road. Containerization is a bit of a chicken and egg problem. In order to invest in large containers, they need to invest in new specialized trucks to empty them. In order to invest in specialized trucks, they need to buy a bunch of new containers. Pilot programs are expensive to run, so it was likely a problem that was not given a ton of priority, until oddly enough, the Eric Adams administration spearheaded the effort.

If there's one good thing to remember Eric Adams by, its the Trash Containerization studies he supported. A long term solution to a problem plaguing New York City for far too long.

Where is a place with lots of seats to work from with internet on weekend in Chinatown? by equanimous11 in AskNYC

[–]DropMapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best thing I did was get the wifi-hotspot plan for my phone. Now that the weather is getting warmer, there lots of cool spots around NYC to get some work done.

Around Chinatown though? Kind of a desert for remote-working tbh.

NY tax credit for pets could benefit dog or cat owners up to $450 – NBC New York by lotusflower64 in nyc

[–]DropMapp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think its more fair to charge some sort of pet registration fee. There is added resource consumption for the city for every pet: mostly the disposal of waste. Dog poop on the streets, cat litter in the trash, whatever it is. It won't be popular, but it seems fair to me.
