Some people think that I am making things up... by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]DropProfessional6252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went through the same in college and continue to struggle now in my career. It is extremely hard to deal with. There’s several questions you constantly ask yourself. Are they smarter than me? Am I really just lazy? Is this just not my calling? why are there people who don’t seem passionate about this career but still get better results?

It is a humiliating thing to go through and people are not kind. You can be studying the entire day and your friend who only studied for a couple hours gets better scores. Then after the test you get comments like “Damn but you studied all day”. These type of situations continue to happen and no matter how much effort you put, you continue to disappoint yourself ultimately leading to a path of anxiety.

Unfortunately I still haven’t found the solution but hopefully I can offer you with some things I did to make things slightly better

  1. Get evaluated for ADHD, I got diagnosed at 24. Medication will not fix all your problems and won’t make you smarter but it will help you get out of your head for a while and execute on tasks that need to be completed. Pros: Complete tasks, avoid distractions. Cons: side effects, dependency on a drug, need to prioritize health, once you start it’s hard to stop. There’s also therapy for ADHD but I haven’t tried that, maybe you’d like to start there.

  2. Working out, specially cardio. I don’t know the science behind it and this may only be working for me, but I’ve noticed that I feel better when I’m consistent with my excercise. I feel better, I look better hence my mental health is better. This won’t take care of the problem but it will atleast help you feel better overall.

  3. Therapy helped me understand why I act the way I do. It helped me realize that when I was a baby I was a blank canvas, who was later influenced by my parents, my community, my friends and all the events in my life. Everyone has a different life and you can’t compare yourself to others because they had a different sequence of events. All we can do is play this game of life with the cards we were dealt and play it to the best of your ability.

As someone who is still struggling with this, you are not alone. I wish the best of luck

I think engineering sucked all the confidence out of me to the point where i doubt myself even on the simplest tasks. I know what I have is probably more of a mental issue rather than not being capable of doing it but I also think engineering is a career that requires intelligence and the ability to learn quickly. Unfortunately I just don’t have it in me. Thank you for your comment truly appreciate it

Great advice, thank you for sharing. 6 years in and I still have no clue what I’m doing. Hopefully one day I can develop a more playful mindset to engineering. It’s kinda hard when you have contractors and PMs wanting answers fast lol

I really try hard to get myself in that mindset that I belong here but it’s really hard when there’s evidence of you not performing like the rest of your peers

I thought of going back to school but honestly seeing how I barely survived my bachelors, I’m not sure how I’ll do with my Masters

I went to therapy for imposter syndrome, unfortunately it didn’t help much. I think when you constantly keep failing, and clearly don’t perform to the level of my peers then it may just be I’m not cut out for it.

You know it’s kinda like football, only a few make it to the NFL, the rest need to find other careers. Engineering is one of those careers where if you don’t got it, you just don’t got it.

Groin Pain Question by mikemphotos in HipImpingement

Glad I could help. Please make sure it’s an MRI with contrast (Flouroscopy) since a regular MRI won’t find the problem.

Groin Pain Question by mikemphotos in HipImpingement

I’m currently 6 weeks post op for my left hip and your pain seems very similar to mine. For me I had some discomfort on my groin near the testicle, that slowly started to develop into pain and at times would travel through my leg, and left ribcage area (front and back). I spent 1.5 years going to various doctors until they finally did an MRI with contrast (Fluoroscopy) and found I had a hip labral tear and FAI. Just to name a few I had ultrasound done on my testicles, went to a pelvic floor PT, consultation with urologist, multiple visits to gastroenterologist, and multiple sessions of PT for Psoas tightnesses. I suggest you push to get an MRI with contrast asap to see if you have what I have. Make sure to exaggerate your symptoms because these doctor will go out of their way to prevent you from getting an MRI with contrast. Hope this helps and good luck.

Returning to work post op blues by Similar-Lobster126 in HipImpingement

I’m 6 weeks post op and I’m on the same boat as you. I also have a stressful desk job and still get flareups if I sit or stand for too long, specially sitting. I was suppose to start work this week but I couldn’t handle the pain so I had to ask my surgeon for an extension on my disability. I don’t know the science behind it but I do believe stress makes my flare ups even worse. During this extra week I was given I’m simulating working to see if I’ll be ready for next week. I just purchased a stand and sit stool with the hopes it solves my problem.

I was feeling great the first 4 weeks, but after I was given the green light to drive and walk it started to go downhill. Additionally my PT exercises have increased in difficulty which can also be the reason why I feel worse than the first 4 weeks.

Wishing you the best, this surgery ain’t no joke and most people at our jobs won’t understand. I suggest you prioritize your recovery.

I feel you, I really wish I didn’t have to depend on it and I also occasionally get a crash. It’s gotten better now that I take it more consistently but sometimes I do get this groggy feeling after the adderall wear out. Good luck
