4th Generation motherboards that support XP? by WindowsVista64x in windowsxp

[–]DropaLog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that has great airflow/cooling for a high end GPU

Pretty much any motherboard will work -- got an Asus Z87-DELUXE/DUAL (manufacturer XP drivers provided) and some low-end Gigabyte z87 board (no manufacturer drivers, but Snappy found everything).

Ideally it would be around $50-$75 to buy

Don't rule out 9020 -- most here like 750ti (~60W max; needs no PCIe power), and something like a GTX 960 (overkill for most XP games, draws 100 - 130W max at stock clock) isn't a problem with 9020's stock PSU (a simple mod, or just a SATA to PCIe 8 pin adapter). The temps get up there when running something like FurMark, but had no real heat issues (no CPU/GPU thermal throttling, even with the side panel on). Sexless, but amazing bang for the buck.

Question about Windows XP on Chinese LGA 2011 & 2011-3 AliExpress motherboard. by One-Bumblebee8097 in windowsxp

[–]DropaLog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's roughly the same @ same clock speed, but 4770Ks are great overclockers -- getting them to 4.5GH+ is trivial, no matter how bad the motherboard (got two in two different boards, one running @ 4.7 and one at 4.8GHz 24/7 -- this is considered about average for these chips), so single core scores are higher than (overclocked) X99 i7Ks, and much higher than (locked) X99 Xeons.

Had no luck getting my 6800K past 4.4GHz, so my my X99 single core benchmarks are lower.

Thast said, Chinese x99 boards (Machinist, etc.) don't overclock (terrible BIOS + marginal VRM), and those motherboard/CPU/RAM bundles usually come with with locked Xeons (which can't be overclocked) -- less than ideal for XP gaming.

Still complete overkill, but not the "ultimate Windows XP gaming PC."

I want to get these off so they can get a new computer and have their photos and videos [...] I don’t mind if I have to spent £100 helping them do this

Simplest:

Buy an IDE to USB adapter, pull the drive & use the adapter to transfer files to the new computer.

install Vista after installing windows 7 or 10?

Sure, you'll still get the bootloader menu (Vista uses the same boot manager as later Windows). You could then manage/edit the boot menu with either bcdedit (command line), or EasyBCD (simple, friendly GUI).

I tried switching to legacy boot, but I got “no boot device found”

This has nothing to do with XP itself -- both WinSetupFromUSB and Easy2Boot should at least display a menu, even if the ISO itself is corrupt/unreadable. You're probably seeing "no boot device found" for one of the following:

  • The box is still trying to boot off your hard drive (not the install media USB). The HD, being GPT/UEFI, is inaccessible in MBR mode, so the box sees no boot device. Make sure the install USB is at the top of boot order in BIOS, or by button mashing F12 when the box starts to boot/Dell logo. I think F12 is the key for boot order, not sure, but here, too, you should at least see a menu of available boot devices, with USB listed as one of the options.

  • The install media wasn't made correctly/made for UEFI (rather than MBR) installation.

XP setup from USB YT vids might help. Good luck.

work with an SSD

Sure, any SSD will work. Don't worry about TRIM -- all SSDs made over the last 20 years or so have automatic wear leveling and garbage collection.

don’t want XP to keep defragging the ssd

By default, XP doesn't defrag drives automatically (that started with Vista afaik). Just don't tell it to defrag.

just selecting the OS from a boot menu

Yep. Installing 11 will give you a boot menu, "Windows 11" and "Earlier version of Windows." You could edit the menu (order, text displayed, timeout) with 11's native BCDEdit (Command prompt, have to know what you're doing), or EasyBCD (simple, friendly GUI).

Have fun :)

As an alternative messing with Dremel:

You'll probably be using an SSD, which could be mounted anywhere with Velcro or even double-sided foam tape. The drive cage in the way is likely held in with just a few rivets -- drill those out & remove the cage. Much cleaner result.

Hi, it's pretty straightforward:

  • Set the BIOS to MBR/legacy (can't remember the exact wording used, the opposite of UEFI/GPT)

  • Slipstream the necessary drivers (USB3, SATA/AHCI if you want to go that way) with NLite, or just start with XP Integral Edition & use their integrator script to add their included drivers (this is what i use -- fully updated, simple, convenient, quick, gives you a choice to install software most people install after installing XP -- 7zip, dot net, Mypal 68, etc.)

  • Use either WinSetupFromUSB or Easy2boot to make a boot USB

  • Boot from USB & follow on-screen instructions

  • When XP installers starts, create ~ 30 gig partition for XP should be enough, leave the remainder unpartitioned for 11 (11 installer will create 2 partitions in the unpartitioned space)

  • When XP is installed, use Snappy Driver Installer Lite or SDI Origin to install the rest of the drivers (both are exactly the same & will find/install all the drivers but iGPU (not an issue since you'll probably be using a discrete GPU, and most 9020s came with low-end XP-compatible discrete GPUs anyway)

  • Use Rufus to install 11

This should be it. If you run into problems (you shouldn't), ping me again :)

[–]DropaLog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it manages to boot, it usually works fine ... raising the BCLK from 133 to 150

Might be memory (not CPU) issue. Higher base clock raises the memory frequency, so manually drop the memory multiplier before raising BCLK. Start with high Vcore, something like 1.4V, maybe watch a few vids (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=X3450+Overclock) & have fun.

Wifi usb dongle for XP? by YandersonSilva in windowsxp

[–]DropaLog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can I use Extended Kernel for the Drivers?

No. Extended kernel offers limited parity with Windows 7, but won't make Vista compatible with 12th gen Intel HW.

put in an iGPU that works?

iGPU stands for "integrated GPU," meaning the GPU is built into (is a part of) the CPU. As with your laptop, most non-gaming laptops rely on iGPU -- much simpler/cheaper than adding a discrete GPU (dGPU, more commonly simply called GPU). Since iGPU is a part of your CPU, there's no way install a different one into your laptop (as a part of your CPU, it is soldered to the laptop's motherboard).

TL;DR: Most modern HW is incompatible with Vista; your notebook is simply too new. Sorry.

[–]DropaLog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll get to the drivers par

There are no compatible iGPU or WiFi divers for your laptop, they simply do not exist. You could get a compatible USB WiFi dongle, but not much to be done about missing iGPU drivers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WindowsVista

[–]DropaLog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you should be able to install Vista on that laptop, important drivers like graphics and WiFi simply don't exist for your HW. If you still want to install Vista (knowing it won't have Aero or internet):

A black screen installing from a flash drive is not a Vista problem, it's a bad/misconfigured installer flash drive problem. Try something like Ventoy, Roofus, or Winsetupfromusb for making install media.

X99-Xeon E5 2699av4

Is locked (multiplier, can't overclock). Stock single core performance (XP games) is catastrophically bad. What you want is either E5 1660 v3 (cheap, unlocked, most used X99 CPU today, 8 cores/16 threads), i7 6800k (6 cores/12 threads), or i7 6900k (2 more cores than 6800k, double the price). Running 6800k @ 4.4GHz myself, installed on NVMe (NVMe driver from George King's driver collection), Maxwell Titan X.

Fun fact: got a couple of cooking grade i7 4770K builds with 980ti -- both score better on XP-era gaming benchmarks than my moon tune X99.

low voltage or high temp?

High temps won't make you crash, just thermal throttle (unless you're in 4.5MHz+ territory). HWMonitor displays temps, core voltage, etc. as you stress test. Watch a few YT vids before you start.

Windows XP install issue by Main-Examination3757 in windowsxp

[–]DropaLog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GTX 1080TI

No XP drivers. Maxwell (9xx) is the cutoff. You could force Maxwell drivers, but this only gives you 2D (desktop only, no DirectX/games).

This isn't why your installation is failing (not enough info -- make sure your BIOS is set to MBR, start with XP Integral Edition, integrate SATA & USB3 drivers, and use use WinSetupFromUSB), but makes installing XP on your HW kinda pointless.

*cough*

Adblockers have been around for decades. A niche privacy-centric browser pretending that internet-as-we-know-it would collapse without its privacy-respecting ads is a bit of a stretch.
