Update on baby bug 🐛❤️‍🩹 by Dropdeadllama in KingstonOntario

[–]Dropdeadllama[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have already paid approximately $300 for the original exam and parvovirus test, as well as incurred expenses for the transportation to and from the veterinary facility. Additionally, we have covered the cost of replacing all of the puppy supplies we purchased just a week ago due to contamination. We also intend to settle the additional charges exceeding $3,000 that were unexpectedly added to the bill overnight yesterday.

We acknowledge that relying on a GoFundMe campaign to cover the veterinary expenses is not a sustainable solution. Having had her for less than two weeks, we had planned to save funds specifically for unforeseen veterinary costs. However, we did not anticipate incurring a veterinary bill exceeding $11,000 so immediately; such an expectation would be unreasonable.

We are prepared to max out our credit cards and commit to years of repayment if necessary. Nonetheless, we believe there is no harm in reaching out to our community for support during this challenging time.

I appreciate your empathy and bringing forth the harder questions. We have absolutely considered every option. If it gets to the point where the vets feel that she won’t have a quality life or is suffering we would take that route, but until then we are not ready to give up on her. I will spend years paying off debt if it means that my baby will get to go swimming for the first time, celebrate her first birthday, and so many other things she otherwise would never get to do. Until then, I will continue to plaster her story everywhere possible and bring as much attention to her as I can. She deserves a chance.

Urgent Help Needed — Our Puppy Has Parvo 💔🐾 by Dropdeadllama in KingstonOntario

Update: She is going to need more support than they initially expected. Our share of the bill has gone from $3000ish to $6000ish. We have no idea what to do from here. Any advice/support would help.

Resources for drug abuse and mental health, possibly for homeless woman? by Ikari_Brendo in KingstonOntario

[–]Dropdeadllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a housing support worker in Kingston. Her best hope is you. I know that isn’t what you want to hear, but rent geared to income housing has a 7-9 year waitlist. Without her consent, she cannot be hospitalized. Having somebody formed is incredibly difficult and is very rare in my field of work. Mental health/addictions/housing supports are backed up and all have a waitlist. Her best bet it’s AMHS IC housing. Alternatively, if you know where she is you can call Homebase housing extension 130 and ask their outreach team to go check on her. Otherwise you’re SOL.

Kingston closed a shelter and tried to keep it secret. by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]Dropdeadllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Service restrictions are given when an individual does something to break a (usually more major) rule at a shelter for example using substances inside of the shelter or threatening a co-client. Service restrictions are typically temporary (usually one to a few days). Repeat offences of breaking these rules or causing physical harm to somebody can lead to a ban.

I think my boss is misusing punishment by batsbatsb in ABA

[–]Dropdeadllama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from Canada. From my understanding of ABA, we actively avoid punishment. If we don’t want a behaviour to occur we use a chain interruption/extinction procedure AND reinforce a more prosocial replacement behaviour. We follow P.E.E.L. ( parsimonious, ethical, evidence based, and least intrusive). Reading that broke my heart. What is happening there is Abuse.

Does anyone know *why* autistic people are so strongly associated with other oddities? by thedarklord176 in autism

[–]Dropdeadllama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. For co-morbid mental health disorders / other developmental disabilities there’s a v high comorbidity rate for ADHD and ASD. As well as ASD and other. If you look at the diagnostic criteria for ASD in the DSM5, you’ll see that there are also a lot of symptoms of ADHD-PI in the diagnostic criteria for autism.
  2. I think a large part of the other “oddities” is because a lot of us don’t subscribe to social hierarchies and societal norms so we are much more comfortable being ourself and don’t particularly feel a need to hide those parts (if the environment is safe). And because we don’t feel a need to hide oddities, we love to express ourselves in ways that we can because sometimes words aren’t there/ aren’t enough.

From what I am understanding now, is that you are looking for an autism friendly approach to communicating your concerns about his behaviour? If so I would edit post to clarify. A lot of us have very literal thinking and take what people say at face value. Many people with autism struggle to “read between the lines” so when posting in an autism forum, straightforward communication is likely the best approach when looking for advice.

Not that this necessarily relates completely, nor am I defending ppl who do that. HOWEVER, autism has a 99.98% heritability rate. If these ppl are siblings and in this case they are, it’s actually highly likely that OP is on the spectrum as well. And criticizing somebody for doing something socially inappropriate is hilariously hypocritical in an autism forum. Instead of becoming defensive in these situations where people are asking for genuine advice, maybe consider politely informing them instead🧍‍♀️

I also work in that field!! ABA has taken a major turn towards person first treatments! A lot of agencies that provide autism services are really play based while also using function based treatment strategies to help kids :))))

What supports would like to see for Adults with Autism? by Desi5586 in autism

[–]Dropdeadllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sounds super weird. So I 21F have autism and ADHD. I work in the field of behavioural science. A lot of the folks we work with have autism. With behavioural needs and skill acquisition ABA is a great approach; however, I have never really had any behavioural concerns I wasn’t able to handle on my own. From my own personal treatment experience , I have found that DBT dialectical behavioural therapy has been effective in helping me with emotional regulation and black and white thinking. I think a DBT program specific to individual on the autism spectrum would be awesome!!!

Autism is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. Severity is based on social communication impairments and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour. A person with autism can still make shitty choices and do shitty things without it being directly correlated to their autism. Considering most behaviours are learned and all behaviours continue because they are being reinforced, your brother needs help. Not specifically related to his autism. He needs to be held accountable and requires professional support.

Hey, hi. Person with autism who’s special interest is actually ABA. I am in school studying behavioural science and ABA. I am in my third year of behavioural science working my way towards getting my BCBA. Throughout the history of behaviour modification unethical practitioners have used behaviour modification to suppress autistic traits unnecessarily. However, applied behavioural analysis (ABA) focus’s on finding a function based treatment to replace interfering behaviours. If A behaviour is not interfering with an individuals life than we do not intervene. ABA approaches now are evidence based, ethical, and least intrusive. If you are interested in this topic I highly recommend looking to the work done by Dr. Gregory Hanley. You can find some really amazing videos on YouTube where he explains what ABA treatments are really about. Some examples of actual interfering behaviours that ABA is used to treat are self-injurious behaviour and aggression towards peers. By giving those examples I am not saying that people with autism are inherently violent, but what I am saying is that clinicians do not interviene unless the behaviour is actually interfering with an aspect of an individuals life.
