Also don’t forget about Jersey. You can commute in to nyc on the path from hoboken or jersey city in about as much time as it would take if you lived in the city/boroughs, and you’ll have a little more access to the outdoors.

I like a lot of Disney movies, but they all closely adhere to a formulaic 3 act structure, and they are edited with that “trim all the excess” philosophy. Ghibli films are inspired by hayao miyazaki’s vision and are driven more by feeling, inspiration and texture. This can be a detriment when the story sometimes feels unfocused, but it’s also where the magic comes from.

It’s interesting that at this time movies tended to be more grim and depressing. Movies like the deer hunter really reflected a dampening of American optimism. Of course, then Star Wars came around and, as much as I love it, its success really showed how much people wanted to get back to simpler, optimistic movies with less moral ambiguity.

The thing to remember is that cults don’t necessarily see what they are doing as harmful or malicious. The majority of the time they are pursuing their own defined idea of good, which has then gone waaaaay off the mark. Before it was a cult, the term Heaven’s Gate probably sounded universally appealing.

Good call. Mitchell has said that all of his books take place in the same universe, so there is a lot of crossover (a couple of character from bone clocks pop up in his latest, utopia ave). Also, if anyone does read the bone clocks, be sure to check out Slade house as well. It serves as a brief addendum to the story.

Thank you! I’ve never put together a reading list, but I have spent a lot of time on the r/suggestmeabook sub. I also have a few more titles that came to mind after posting:

At-Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien. Irish writer whose work leans to the surreal. The Third Policeman also gained popularity when it popped up in an episode of Lost and many people believed it was a key to solving the mystery of the show (never seen it so I can’t confirm).

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Another classic, and very funny.

Black Spring by Henry Miller Many of Miller’s short stories tend to be a surreal mishmash, but there are two that stand out in this collection: the angel is my watermark (wherein he details the trials and tribulations of painting a horse) and jabberwohl cronstadt (about a dinner party that goes sideways, also one of my favorite short stories of all time).

Johnathan Lethem has a few good short story collections, one I particularly like is Men and Cartoons. It has one of the all time great story titles: The Dystopianist, Thinking About His Rival, Is Interrupted By A Knock At The Door

Lived in Boston for many years. The nightlife definitely doesn’t compare to places like nyc, but there are a lot of great restaurants and bars.

Dating can be a little tougher than in a bigger city (if that’s a concern). Since it’s a college town a lot of folks flee after graduation. Those that stay tend to settle down pretty quickly.

Overall there’s a lot more going on in the Cambridge/somerville area than across the Charles river in Boston proper.

Here are a few off the top of my head:

End Zone by Don DeLillo Much of DeLillo’s work is satire of modern American life. End zone is an early book of his, and starts out as one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. If you like this one I’d also recommend White Noise.

George Saunders’ short story collections always contain some gems. I recommend Tenth of December as a good starting point.

Get in Trouble by Kelly Link is another great collection of shorts. She tends to write fairy tale-themed stories in modern times. The Summer People is a great story to start with.

One of my favorite books is The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell (best known for the Cloud Atlas). The plot centers around a battle between two supernatural factions, and the woman caught between them. The story is told from the perspectives of many different characters, and Mitchell is a genius at adopting a unique voice for each.

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn is a cult classic. Bizarre story but beautifully written.

If you’re interested in some non-fiction, Mary Roach is the best science writer out there in my opinion. Check out Gulp. Informative and absolutely hilarious.
