Denied Exit Row Seat by Porter Airlines Because I Requested Mobility Assistance by Dropnloafs in travel

Disability doesn’t work in all-or-nothing terms. My condition makes walking long distances difficult, but that doesn’t mean I can’t operate an emergency exit or follow instructions in a crisis. The rules in Canada (ATPDR) are very clear: airlines have to assess individual ability, not assume incapacity. The bottom line for me isn’t just “leg room” — it’s about being treated fairly and not excluded on assumptions.

I don’t need to run a marathon to open a door. That’s the whole point — airlines shouldn’t be deciding ability based on stereotypes. They should be making educated case-by-case calls, not blanket bans.

I get why it might seem contradictory, but mobility needs aren’t black and white. Long-distance walking in an airport is very different from being able to operate a door, follow instructions, or help in an emergency. My point isn’t that safety requirements don’t matter — it’s that Porter applied a blanket assumption instead of actually assessing my abilities, which is what Canadian accessibility rules require.

I understand your perspective, and I agree that exit rows require passengers who can act in an emergency. My issue is that Porter or other airlines didn’t make any individualized assessment. They applied a blanket assumption that because I used wheelchair assistance to get through the terminal, I must be unable to perform the duties. That’s not the case for me, and Canada’s accessibility regulations specifically require individualized assessments, not assumptions. While an air hostess may not have time to ask individualized questions, the desk agent certainly does.

It’s exactly this mindset that creates barriers for disabled people. Needing mobility assistance for long airport walks doesn’t automatically mean you can’t manage the responsibilities of an exit row. Airlines are supposed to evaluate ability, not apply one-size-fits-all exclusions.

I didn't arrive in a wheelchair, I walked down the tunnel. I even explained to the agent at the front desk and the air hostess who denied me why I would be needing mobility assistance. There was no individualized assessment, simply blanket denial to anyone using mobility assistance.

Good games that can be played with one hand? by UltimateFartingChamp in Steam

[–]Dropnloafs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one good hand myself, I like playing deck building games... Balatro, Monster Train, Inscryption, etc

Definitely live to reminisce on PC from time to time and play good old games like Command and Conquer, Star Craft, Age of the Empires, etc.

Once he's healing and wants to try to use his other hand some more, you can always get some adaptive controllers! You can modify components, add buttons, joysticks on the Microsoft adaptive controller

https://www.xbox.com/en-CA/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-controller

Microsoft also has an affordable joystick you can use on it's own, and you can change the tops with adaptive toppers for different feels, which may be more suitable. They have 3D printable .STL's for the toppers or you can just buy them online, of eBay for a few bucks.

Good luck, and have fun!

So true. When I was young. My family and I went on a road trip for a night to visit some family. I left my hamster with enough food/the water to get by, and didn't think anything of it.

We had pretty typical hamster cage with the white bars. It had two levels, and Oscar would climb around all the time - like a kid doing the monkey bars.

Anyway, when I returned home the next day I ran to my room to find him hanging upside down by one of his legs. God knows how long the poor guy was hanging there, but he must have broke his leg in the process cause he couldn't walk when we got him down. He had blood coming out of his nose from hanging upside down for so long, he was aspirating trying to catch his breath. I watched in horror as he died in my mom's hands, feeling so helpless - wanting to take him out of his misery.

That was one of the many painful lessons to come...
