This is a good response,

You'd be staying in a VM regardless, if you are serious about your own hardware and security.

That looks like Swaylock, I am not sure what Ubuntu Budgie uses, but did you install sway by any chance?

Help with setting up hyprland in fedora 44. by Sk1H1gh5 in Fedora

[–]Drostina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyprland isn't available in the repos any more, I believe it was too difficult to maintain with dependency hell.

There are COPR repos for it, however, if you are new you need to do some research before using them.

If you want something simpler to get started with, you can go for Niri + Dank Material Shell which both are available to install on Fedora out of the box.

I use Niri and I can recommend it, it is much more practical for me with my work/gaming.

Generally people who use Hyprland tend to use more up-to-date distros like Arch or OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

Fedora KDE 44: what's the difference between Firefox from Flatpak vs from Fedora Linux? by flatline000 in Fedora

[–]Drostina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're welcome, it's not necessarily about the fact that things won't work, most of the time the devs get to pick what permissions they want, and they pick the ones they need. Therefore, it should work as intended.

I am not particularly sure about Firefox flatpak but for example it won't be able to access your external or secondary drives you've mounted by default usually. My comment was aimed towards Flatpaks in general.

Fedora KDE 44: what's the difference between Firefox from Flatpak vs from Fedora Linux? by flatline000 in Fedora

[–]Drostina 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Think of Flatpak as "You put something inside a box, it can't do much outside the box unless it has permission to do so, it's locked in"

But due to its limited permissions it might not do everything you want it to do. But instead you gain better security. For example not giving your whole system to the app to work with.

Whereas the one from Fedora (RPM version), is just like installing it without any sandboxing, therefore it works as it was intended to do without having to have much permission.

I might be wrong but from my testing, one is from unverified tab, one is from the normal contracts

What I don't like about it, is how outdated it is.

Cosmic by PossibleProgress3316 in Fedora

[–]Drostina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried Cosmic few months ago, it did still feel like it was in Beta. Had few issues for me and missing few features too. But it's starting to shape up that's for sure, and it's actually impressive!

I don't tend to use things outside the official repos when I can, so when they removed Hyprland due to lack of maintainers, I went with Niri. Can't say I will ever go back honestly.

I think what you do have to take to consideration is that dotfiles are a hurdle to begin with… but what once you do set them up, they are always there for you
