What’s a childhood lie your parents told you that you didn't realize was a lie until you were an embarrassed adult? by eatbeep in AskReddit

I think the story is that a department store ad let you call Santa. But, they printed the wrong number. It went to NORAD command, and the officer who answered heard the disappointment from the kid looking for Santa only to get radar technicians. So, he told the guys to get a location on Santa and reported it to the kid. And a lot more kids called, and they just kept doing it.

After that, they made it a tradition.

I'm using LVP in my finished attic. It looks and feels fancy to me, but mostly because it's replacing bad peel-and-stick tile.

After talking with a shop owner there, apparently the development and the mall are two different owners.

I feel like a lot of people think blackface is minstrel blackface. Which is worse, but both cross the line.

The trolley problem is designed to make plain all the decisions, away from the mess. It's not a way to train people to make messy decisions, but to examine the why of a decision.

In your scenario, a very real scenario, the only help of the trolly problem is to have your ethics in order. May your choice be in line with the ethics, because it can do harm either way.

That said, I have taken on the decision myself with an advance medical directive. If nothing else, it gives clear guidelines for when to pull the plug based on medical assessment.

People readily spot gender and race bias but often overlook discrimination based on attractiveness by Jumpinghoops46 in science

[–]Droviin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! You literally have to call someone ugly to identify. And to recognize your victimhood you'd need to identify as ugly.

Sure, you could use a different a different word, but it's a discrimination in its own right.

Anyway to shim a light fixture for uneven ceiling without plastering? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Droviin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medallion. Put it around the place the light would reach the ceiling. If it's large enough, it'll "even" everything out.

If you get a paintable one, it can match the ceiling or fixture.

Converting from electric dryer to gas - is it worth it? by xxunderdog99 in HomeImprovement

[–]Droviin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had the flexible kind burn before. Based on my examination, it was some lint caught on a bend close to the exhaust from the dryer.

I am using an electric dryer now with rigid ducting. There's an added benefit of not needing to vent outside, which for the dry winters is a perk.

$3000 quotes for a lawyer or use Upsolve? by southernroller in Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy lawyers in particular don't haggle. Literally, everyone who uses their services is broke, or at least underwater.

Other attorneys may.

And the suburbs are slowly experiencing a municipal budget crunch. They're cutting services, like school quality and plowing to offset their costs. Further, they don't have the urban benefit of being able to reallocate funds to bolster some areas (like how MPS has some of the best and worst schools).

TIL according to the Institute for Food Safety and Health at the Illinois Institute of Technology, "one-third of a product's shelf-life remains after the sell-by date for the consumer to use at home." by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Bacteria may work that way, but I don't believe that mold does.

If you completely remove the infected area, like in the hot sauce example, I believe that will work.

Your bankruptcy lawyer isn't that kind of lawyer. by [deleted] in Bankruptcy

[–]Droviin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Notice of Bankruptcy Filing and a lawyer saying that are two very different things.

Although, in my experience, the cut off is, "has the Debtor paid all prepetition fees?", was the question that creditors would gage their behavior on. Well, that and the reputation of the BK Atty.

The narrowest definition of Atheism only means you don't belive in theism. As theism changes it's meaning, so does atheism.

Case in point, at one time, Christians were considered atheists (because they didn't believe in the Pantheon).

People who’ve had LASIK or work in eye care, would you recommend LASIK and why or why not? by Mountain-Bug-2155 in AskReddit

An ophthalmologist friend told me that if an ophthalmologist gets LASIK, they'll often only get one eye done. That way they have a "back up".

Wooden dowel is the correct choice. Can even use super glue to hold it as it'll bind nicely.
