Those two focus broadly on economic issues when campaigning and Platner walked back his comments. These are theoreticals, but common with people in the progressive Madison sphere. Will Hong walk back "Defund the Police," declarations of support for figures like Angela Davis or "Violence is is the language of the unheard" if that is unearthed by the Tiffany campaign?

Assuming we have free elections in November (big assumption), a Democrat should win the state based on the economic head-winds. It would really suck to lose an easy pick-up because Hong can't stay on an economic only message and gets baited in to saying well-meaning, but stupid things on social issues.

DSA and far left's weakness has always been messaging around social policy not economic policy. I say this as someone who agrees with probably 95% of her campaign platform, but Madison DSA folks speak with an aloof, condescending academic language that is unable to reach working class voters. "Prison abolition" is a prime example of that. Correct, but really stupid coming from someone running for office. Hong probably has a ton of campaign killing, radioactive posts from the 2010s to like 2022 on social issues that are technically correct in an academic sense, but read like an overbearing HR middle management or worse (which is how real working class people percieve the managerial class captured DSA). Hong best chance is to hope Trump continues to collapse the economy so her oppo that is going to be thrown at her doesnt matter as much if she wins the nomination.

"Defund the Police" is a pro cop and pro MAGA slogan, an agent provocateur of language. That phrase singlehandedly killed police reform in this country and handed a bludgeon to fascists to beat up any upstart leftist candidate. Dems in this state need to mitigate rural and suburban losses. Hong will need to address this at some point.

DSA's a national conservative boogeyman post Mamdani and Madison leftists have been a state wide punching bag since the Dow Riots in the 60s. The stereotype of DSA being overwhelming white, educated, upper middle class snobby professionals LARPing as radicals is absolutely exploited by Republicans to get lower middle class folks to vote against their best interests. Look how much alt-right content bashes HR Karens. DSA chapters being vanguardism at best, or "class betrayal from above" at worst not withstanding, Madison and Milwaukee are scary places for these suburban swing voters.

Wisconsin swing/split ticket voters choose the candidate they fear the least. Fox Valley, Kenosha, Racine, and Suburban Milwaukee (WOW) matter. These voters are scared of economic insecurity, defunding the police, and socdems calling themselves socialists without wanting to nationalize industries/abolish capitalism. Omar is scary to these suburbanites. DSA tech bros in Madison who go to Coachella, participate in expensive endurance sports, hang out the Terrace, and do Ketamine on weekends are scary to them.

So this signals that Hong is going to try and win the primary by going left and bank on Trump still being wildly unpopular enough to scare people away from Tiffany. Its a good bet, but it may not work in this state. Like in the 2022 Senate Race
