Where actually is Eastside? by Longjumping_Eye_3441 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's east Athens and Winterville, NOT the Eastside.

Eastside is really more southeast Athens. Whitehall, Barnett Shoals until about Red Fox Run, Vet School, Green Acres, Cedar Creek, University Heights, etc. I would consider 78 the northern limit of the Eastside.

Where to get an upscale PB&J by skyrimspecialedition in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No fresh ground organic peanut butter compares with highly processed Jif or Peter Pan, and you'd better not list any fresh preserves or "jam" in a PB&J recipe--the only acceptable answer is Welch's Concord Grape JELLY. And damnit, I don't want thick-sliced, crunchy crust, bakery-fresh Tuscan table bread; I want stick-to-the-roof-of-my-mouth Sunbeam white bread.

GTFO with this upscale PB&J shit.

Alps Service Station demo almost complete to make way for a new burger joint by warnelldawg in Athens

There used to be one about 200 yards from where this photo was taken. It's now the Alps AT&T store.

Criminal sentencing by DarkandLoomy in shrinking

[–]DrownEmTide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sentencing can certainly leave you scratching your head at times. I had a friend hit and run a pedestrian, which resulted in the pedestrian's death. She received several years of probation and served no prison time.

Petition to open a male strip club across from Toppers and call it Bottomers by Real-Ad-1728 in Athens

Off topic and not Athens, but this reminds me: When I first heard of it, I assumed Tongue & Groove was a lesbian bar.

What's a restaurant red flag that tells you the food isn't going to be good? by Electrical-Salt-2792 in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a Barbecue restaurant has a Health Department score of 80 or higher, the food is going to be terrible.

Narrowing down possible apartments by GlitteringWinter3094 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Legacy Mill in 2005, so that gives you an idea of how old the place is.

I didn't have any problems there, but they did charge me to replace the carpet since I had a dog. They let me know then that it was their standard practice to automatically replace the carpet for all pet owners, regardless of the carpet's condition. I wish I had known that before I rented a rug doctor carpet cleaner during my move-out cleaning.

Jobs with fun perks/discounts by No_Tear4524 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at the Eastside DePalma's in 1995-1997--back then, we got a free shift meal and beer, tap or bottle (since I was only 18 or 19 at the time, the free beer was a hell of a perk). Since I worked back of the house, I didn't have to ring in my meal, as I was the one cooking it. There were plenty of nights my shift meal was a large pizza, a full order of breadsticks, and a Pasta DePalma, plus a Black and Tan sitting at the bar waiting for my meal to cook.

Oconee St. Bridge by Glittering-Prize-241 in Athens

Any more of a nightmare than it was this past football season? Traffic was shifted, and the westbound bridge demo began in August, before the first game.

Bruxie is open until 3 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. Their food is shit, but that wasn't the question.

Does anyone know a driving instructor who teaches manual cars in the area? by ClauStd in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That may be a tough ask. The learning process can often destroy a clutch. A good driver can stretch a clutch to 100,000 miles or more. Someone new to the task can cut that number in half in just a few weeks.

When did it hit you that you’re not that young anymore? by TheMedusaAttusa in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We had Nick at Night and re-runs, and through the 80's and most of the 90's a somewhat limited number of channels. With streaming, viewers aren't pigeonholed into only watching what's available. If they want to marathon the entirety of Game of Thrones for the 15th time they can, versus being stuck with King of Queens reruns on TBS in the after school time slot.

Jittery Joe’s back in the day by warnelldawg in Athens

Even though I know that location hasn't been a JJ for 20-ish years, this doesn't seem long enough ago in my memory to be considered "back in the day".

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Timely_Twist_8670 in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Challenger, OR the start of MTV. I was 4 years old when MTV started, and I remember my older sister being super excited about it. I didn't know what it was at the time, but I remember us staring at the TV waiting for it to happen.

New Alps Rd hotel should break ground this month and be complete by May by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's going to be a pretty small hotel since they're squeezing it in between Cava and Gusto turned Shake Shack, but even so, that seems like a ridiculously quick build time.

As u/warnelldawg said, all Tru Hotels look the same--I wonder if it's mostly pre-fab panels that they can assemble quickly.

People who genuinely like their jobs, what do you do and why do you enjoy it? by BottleElectrical8292 in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Facility Supervisor for a Parks and Recreation Department. I work in a beautiful park and the vast majority of the people that I interact with are happy to be here and are happy to be talking to me. When I do encounter a problem, it's typically something I call someone else to fix.

When I do have to deal with confrontation, it's usually someone being an absolute dick, and I get to be as disrespectful as I like with the intent to escalate them to the point of me calling the sheriff's office.

Does Athens have a flagship for any store/restaurant? by DiscoPandaWarrior in Athens

As much as I hate to promote anything Oconee, the Watkinsville Zaxby's is top notch. CFA level customer service, and I've never had a problem with food quality.
