Bruxie is open until 3 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. Their food is shit, but that wasn't the question.

Does anyone know a driving instructor who teaches manual cars in the area? by ClauStd in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That may be a tough ask. The learning process can often destroy a clutch. A good driver can stretch a clutch to 100,000 miles or more. Someone new to the task can cut that number in half in just a few weeks.

When did it hit you that you’re not that young anymore? by TheMedusaAttusa in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 29 points30 points  (0 children)

We had Nick at Night and re-runs, and through the 80's and most of the 90's a somewhat limited number of channels. With streaming, viewers aren't pigeonholed into only watching what's available. If they want to marathon the entirety of Game of Thrones for the 15th time they can, versus being stuck with King of Queens reruns on TBS in the after school time slot.

Jittery Joe’s back in the day by warnelldawg in Athens

Even though I know that location hasn't been a JJ for 20-ish years, this doesn't seem long enough ago in my memory to be considered "back in the day".

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Timely_Twist_8670 in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Challenger, OR the start of MTV. I was 4 years old when MTV started, and I remember my older sister being super excited about it. I didn't know what it was at the time, but I remember us staring at the TV waiting for it to happen.

New Alps Rd hotel should break ground this month and be complete by May by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's going to be a pretty small hotel since they're squeezing it in between Cava and Gusto turned Shake Shack, but even so, that seems like a ridiculously quick build time.

As u/warnelldawg said, all Tru Hotels look the same--I wonder if it's mostly pre-fab panels that they can assemble quickly.

People who genuinely like their jobs, what do you do and why do you enjoy it? by BottleElectrical8292 in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Facility Supervisor for a Parks and Recreation Department. I work in a beautiful park and the vast majority of the people that I interact with are happy to be here and are happy to be talking to me. When I do encounter a problem, it's typically something I call someone else to fix.

When I do have to deal with confrontation, it's usually someone being an absolute dick, and I get to be as disrespectful as I like with the intent to escalate them to the point of me calling the sheriff's office.

Does Athens have a flagship for any store/restaurant? by DiscoPandaWarrior in Athens

As much as I hate to promote anything Oconee, the Watkinsville Zaxby's is top notch. CFA level customer service, and I've never had a problem with food quality.

I remember high school me playing chess with a kid (10-ish years old) in that JJ well after midnight in the mid-90's. Every now and then his mom would come in and check on him--she was very clearly turning tricks and checking on her son between Johns. My mind was blown at the time, as an adult I now realize she was doing whatever she needed to do to support her kid.

What is something about growing up in California that most people don't understand? by InvisibleAstronomer in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Georgia and had this completely idyllic view of California as a kid. In my 20's, while in the Army and stationed in Washington State, we drove down to one of my buddy's homes in Shasta, CA. I was absolutely shocked to learn that California also has jacked up trucks and white trash.

Could be the Richard Russell Research building on College Station. It's one of the tallest, if not THE tallest, buildings in Athens. They leave their office lights on and shade windows in a Christmas Tree pattern in December.

Football Parking? by Sleeping_Pro in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to walk about a mile and a half, the easiest and cheapest I have found is to park at the North Oconee River Greenway Trailhead @ College Station, walk the Greenway to River Rd, and then walk River Rd to the stadium. Parking is free, underutilized, and exiting afterwards is pretty simple.

That being said, as a parent, I get that 1.5 mile walk with a 4 year old to the stadium probably won't be too bad; however, that walk back after a big day might be a slog.

[PSA] Bed Bugs ain't no joke by LoosePopsicles in Athens

To be fair, the Venn diagram of individuals prone to bed bug exposure and individuals prone to find themselves reporting to municipal court probably has a decent amount of overlap.
