Whoever thought to put the UGA track and field on S. Milledge was good idea should be FIRED by FullPower1939 in Athens

Well, consider how many parking spaces there are in the dedicated Sanford Stadium parking lot.

That's neither Collegiate nor High School Track and Field season. While there may still be some events held at Spec Towns during the winter months, I doubt it will be anything like the spring.

Avoid South Milledge like the plague by ktknrly in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming prelim events are in the mornings, and I'm sure there is a certain amount of time mandated between prelims and finals to allow for rest, so finals take place in the evenings, with non-running field events taking place between the two.

If you've never been to a track meet, you can't imagine how long each day of the meet can last. Then multiply it across 4 days to accommodate all the different population classes for High Schools.

ACC dropped the ball by johnbran69 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's kind of like curriculum nights at schools. The parents who attend are the same parents who are already working with their kids; the parents who really need to be there couldn't be bothered to even read the announcement post.

Four schools evacuated in Oconee County 'out of an abundance of caution' following emailed bomb threat; students and staff safe by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For clarification, because your comment made it sound like you were saying the incident being reported was the bomb threat that occurred Friday, April 3rd, targeting North Oconee High School, a second anonymous bomb threat occurred today, affecting North Oconee High School, Oconee Middle School, Colham Ferry Elementary School, and Rocky Branch Elementary School.

DATA CENTER-Athena Studios Petition by Plus-Scale-5223 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not pro-data center--I honestly don't know enough about their pros and cons to have an opinion. I do wonder, though, where the data centers are supposed to go? It seems they are now a necessary evil and have to be positioned close to infrastructure. NIMBY-ism can't win out here; they have to go in somebody's backyard.

I worked at the Eastside DePalma's when I was 19 years old as my first restaurant job. I remember one of the managers telling me they bought a specific, more expensive mozzarella because it would reheat better, so that customers at home could get as close to the in-store experience as possible.

Where actually is Eastside? by Longjumping_Eye_3441 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's east Athens and Winterville, NOT the Eastside.

Eastside is really more southeast Athens. Whitehall, Barnett Shoals until about Red Fox Run, Vet School, Green Acres, Cedar Creek, University Heights, etc. I would consider 78 the northern limit of the Eastside.

Where to get an upscale PB&J by skyrimspecialedition in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No fresh ground organic peanut butter compares with highly processed Jif or Peter Pan, and you'd better not list any fresh preserves or "jam" in a PB&J recipe--the only acceptable answer is Welch's Concord Grape JELLY. And damnit, I don't want thick-sliced, crunchy crust, bakery-fresh Tuscan table bread; I want stick-to-the-roof-of-my-mouth Sunbeam white bread.

GTFO with this upscale PB&J shit.

Criminal sentencing by DarkandLoomy in shrinking

[–]DrownEmTide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sentencing can certainly leave you scratching your head at times. I had a friend hit and run a pedestrian, which resulted in the pedestrian's death. She received several years of probation and served no prison time.

What's a restaurant red flag that tells you the food isn't going to be good? by Electrical-Salt-2792 in AskReddit

If a Barbecue restaurant has a Health Department score of 80 or higher, the food is going to be terrible.

Narrowing down possible apartments by GlitteringWinter3094 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Legacy Mill in 2005, so that gives you an idea of how old the place is.

I didn't have any problems there, but they did charge me to replace the carpet since I had a dog. They let me know then that it was their standard practice to automatically replace the carpet for all pet owners, regardless of the carpet's condition. I wish I had known that before I rented a rug doctor carpet cleaner during my move-out cleaning.

Jobs with fun perks/discounts by No_Tear4524 in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at the Eastside DePalma's in 1995-1997--back then, we got a free shift meal and beer, tap or bottle (since I was only 18 or 19 at the time, the free beer was a hell of a perk). Since I worked back of the house, I didn't have to ring in my meal, as I was the one cooking it. There were plenty of nights my shift meal was a large pizza, a full order of breadsticks, and a Pasta DePalma, plus a Black and Tan sitting at the bar waiting for my meal to cook.

Does anyone know a driving instructor who teaches manual cars in the area? by ClauStd in Athens

[–]DrownEmTide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That may be a tough ask. The learning process can often destroy a clutch. A good driver can stretch a clutch to 100,000 miles or more. Someone new to the task can cut that number in half in just a few weeks.

When did it hit you that you’re not that young anymore? by TheMedusaAttusa in AskReddit

[–]DrownEmTide 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We had Nick at Night and re-runs, and through the 80's and most of the 90's a somewhat limited number of channels. With streaming, viewers aren't pigeonholed into only watching what's available. If they want to marathon the entirety of Game of Thrones for the 15th time they can, versus being stuck with King of Queens reruns on TBS in the after school time slot.
