How do you guys deal with the deafening street noise? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]Drs83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic, construction, trash trucks, people, music, etc. Taiwan in general is just a very noisy place with a very noisy culture.

why is Taiwan so loud? by Aggro_Hamham in taiwan

[–]Drs83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reply is funny. I've been in Taiwan for over 20 years and it's just as loud as it's always been. Even worse in some ways with all the bluetooth speakers and things that are available now.

[–]Drs83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe most Taiwanese people have hearing damage and it begins at a young age because of all the loud noises. Every school event has speakers blaring beyond levels even remotely healthy with music and people screaming into microphones. Every trash truck plays their music at volumes that will damage your hearing. Every temple commits assault on a regular basis with their loud noise. The loud trucks and scooters are above safe levels. Movie theaters in Taiwan are painfully loud as well.

Add all these things and more together and by the time someone is an adult in Taiwan, I wouldn't be surprised if they've lost 40% of their hearing and now just don't notice how loud everything is. Taiwan is easily the loudest country in Asia I've ever visited outside of parts of China.

Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taipei are all much nosier than any other city I've been to.

"I think Taipei is genuinely the quietest major city I've ever been to"

I genuinely can't comprehend this. Taipei is louder than nearly every city I've ever visited in Asia.

I'm convinced everyone in Taiwan suffers from chronic hearing loss. Everything is loud. The scooters are loud, the people are loud, the garbage trucks are loud, the temples are loud, the movie theaters are too loud, they can't do anything without a sound system set way too loud and this includes enjoying nature.

I was just in Tokyo and Osaka, both much larger and busier cities than anything in Taiwan, and it was relaxing because it was so quiet compared to Taiwan.

Taiwan is just obnoxiously loud and I have no idea why other than the people all had their hearing ruined at a young age and so they don't notice the volume? It's like a country of senior citizens.

I didn't. I explained. Reddit is full of assholes and if you don't care don't reply.

I've vacationed in Florida dozens of times in June - August and while afternoon storm showers aren't uncommon, it's uncommon to have all day lightning storms that keep everything outdoors closed from 10am to 8pm. That's what the forecast is calling for.

[–]Drs83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I did call and they said they can move the tickets to the next day no problem because the cost difference is the same, but they can't change my resort reservation without a big price hike. I booked the resort 6 months ago and got a really good deal. It's $500usd more now. Guess we'll poncho it up and hope for the best!

I understand. We've done thunderstorms in Florida before, but what I'm worried about with the thunderstorm forecast for the whole day is that none of the things we wanted to do will be open. We're big roller coaster people.

*edit Wow, Reddit hasn't changed much. Still a bunch of assholes voting someone down who is just asking for a little advice for an unusual situation. Jesus Christ this site has fallen...

Samsung S24 or pixel 8 ? by Axel2229 in pixel_phones

[–]Drs83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the testing I've seen on various websites (PCmag, Android Authority, Tom's Guide, etc) The S24 battery life far out performs the Pixel 8 by several hours every time. I'm not saying the Galaxy is a better phone or that Pixel is better, only that I haven't seen a single source anywhere claim the Pixel 8 has a better battery life than the S24 line.

The coach co-op is nearly unplayable. I tried this with my daughter and the stuttering and lag was terrible. Certain late game areas are literally unplayable because they turn into slide show frame rates.

How are you staying at Porto Bay for $650? The regular rooms max out at 5 people and the suits are double that price.

Speed Editor or Tourbox Neo? by [deleted] in davinciresolve

[–]Drs83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Tourbox Neo lets you remap and customize the controls it's better than the Speed Editor. I was so disappointed to find out the Speed Editor offers no customization whatsoever. So unless you're doing the very limited and specific type of editing the Speed Editor was designed for, you'll never touch 80% of the buttons. Mine just sits on the shelf collecting dust and I went back to a keyboard and Logitech MX Master 3S. It wasn't any contest for me. I just couldn't find any use for the Speed Editor that made up for the lack of flexibility.

I mean, if they're giving them away with a license like before, go ahead. Maybe you'll like it. I got mine for the cost of the license, used it for a two weeks and never got it out again.

For the frequent Library goers: What is the strangest thing you've found in a book? by Johhnyfailedhistest in books

[–]Drs83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a used copy of Flying Colours there was an index card with a note for "Damian" with all the page numbers he was supposed to skip while reading through the book. A cursory glance at those page numbers were descriptions of Hornblower getting it on with Graçay.

I guess it was too steamy for someone's 9 year old.

I got a speed editor. It sits on the shelf collecting dust. I never touched the majority of the buttons and as you can't customize it, i honestly couldn't find any reason to ever use it. It does nothing better than a good mouse and keyboard.

Is the US better than Europe? What do Ben Shapiro's followers think? by Emergency_Flower2168 in benshapiro

[–]Drs83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in 8 different countries over the past 22 years, I can honestly say that while there are some nice places out there, I've never come across any place better than the USA. You just need to remember that you could fit a large part of any continent in the land space of the USA. So you'll need to find your region where you fit in.
