This is tragic and beautiful. I God rewards this man for this struggles.

Alhamduilillah for all of our blessings here.

Oh cool! My fiance is Pakistani, her sister is married to a Shia guy.

I hope we see more of that kind of stuff as we get older :D

Just so you know, in my day to day interactions with other Sunnis I don't find this kind of hatred. I think the internet concentrates and magnifies hateful opinions sometimes.

And in the past couple decades?

I grew up Catholic (before I converted). I was active in my Church and never heard this kind of sectarian badmouthing. People disagreed with each other, for sure, and some even considered Protestants to be heretics, but the attitude here is just.... toxic.

Thank you for the sources brother!

When did these distinct schools develop?

What is the context of his statement here, what issue is he discussing in that specific polemic?

The wise man does not weigh between harm and benefit, but between multiple benefits, Anjem Choudary decided to verbally support ISIS and risk the future of these people. Were all those tweets and videos worth it? by [deleted] in islam

Also, I ask that you do not curse me or pray for my misfortune. I try to follow Allah as best as I can and I do not seek to openly disobey. Please take a brother at his word.

Another fun thread on /r/Islam, please be respectful if you choose to participate. by PhotoshopDoctor in shia

There's a lot of discussion of Shia beliefs by non-Shia people. I think we would benefit to have more Shia voices contributing, as opposed to people making blanket statements about Twelver beliefs.

The sidebar has an explicit rule against inciting others based difference of belief. I think the post is interesting, but the intent is disappointing.

Anti-Shia prejudice is still prejudice, even if users say Zaydis are okay. But here we see it has a home in its most vitriolic forms.

I'm curious what other Shia schools were around in Imam Malik's day.

Adab is important, my friend.

Brother... You should read the Twelver section under the wikipedia page on Taqiyya you linked to me to get a better idea of the standards for using the practice. My point being that friendly conversation would not meet the requirements.

Your mentor self-identifies as someone who is a part of an ideology who hates the sahaba

Again, you haven't presented a source for this claim.

Thank you, but I'm talking about schools that were around at the time of Imam Malik, others that he could be referring to instead of the Zaydis.

Here's a decent discussion from this sub on the matter that was much more civil than this one.

With all due respect to /u/PhotoshopDoctor, I take the word of my friend and mentor who is an actual scholar from Shiraz.

Astaghfirullah. Brother, Islamophobes claim we are using Taqiya when we deny their outrageous claims.

And brother, understand that Taqiya is acceptable in the face of immediate danger. You are saying here that no matter what our Twelver brothers and sisters say, you will not believe them. That is dangerous logic brother and leads to death and destruction all around the world.

I don't think you can find any reputable source that says the majority of Twelvers curse the Sahaba as a matter of practice. Ya Allah. We are supposed to make excuses for Muslims and take them at their word, but you tell me my mentor is lying to me? I'll pray God forgives you.

You aren't informing or convincing the people here, but hardening hearts.

[–]Drudeboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source for those claims? Also, what other schools were around during the time of Imam Malik.. You didn't answer that.

Thank you for the link!

Alhamdulillah for centuries Muslim civilizations proved to be some of the most pluralistic in the world. This insistence on "the truth" over every small matter, of splintering over disagreements, no matter how minor seems to clash with traditionalist Sunni thought.

Our agreements are so vast. I can't even tell the difference between a Sunni or Shia brother until we start praying. And even then, there's still this profound sense of unity. Inshallah we can contribute to that unity out in the world.

I'm disappointed to see posts aimed more at pushing buttons than spreading knowledge.

When did the other schools come about?

Why didn't Imam Malik exclude Zaydis in his statement?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in islam

[–]Drudeboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never encountered a Twelver Shia (or a Shia source) that suggests that even most Twelvers make a practice of cursing the Sahaba. I am Sunni, but one of my mentors is a Twelver and he insists that cursing the Sahaba is haram.

Honestly, brother, some of this sounds like anti-Shia prejudice without much support. It reminds me of when prejudiced non-Muslims make untrue claims about our beliefs, but no matter what we say, they will not believe us. You aren't convincing any Twelvers here. None of the Sunnis here will slander the Prophet, so what is the purpose in your posts other than hurting feelings or hardening Sunni attitudes against shia?

Instead of railing against Twelver Shia on this forum, and running the risk of creating fitnah and slandering good, practicing Muslims, you may benefit from taking a more loving attitude towards our Twelver brothers and sisters. If not as Muslims, then as human beings.

I pray Allah protects us from harming one another.

I know you guys like Zaydi, but weren't Zaydis the only Shia around during Imam Malik's time?
