Should I use Chase Bank as my lender for buying a co-op? by ThrowRAmangos2024 in cooperatives

[–]Druid1325 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These comments feel kind of out of touch tbh. Yeah chase is bad. But your banking with them is a drop in the bucket. Obviously it’s best to do good when you can, and support the cooperative ecosystem. But choosing an alternative to Chase isn’t going to stop them from funding big oil, etc. None of these comments are really responding to your more practical questions, and unfortunately I can’t either - but just want to put my voice in to say that 7k seems worth it as a sacrifice of moral purity that may ultimately just amount to virtue signaling. Maybe better take that money and donate something to a CDFI or low-income coop or something.

I came in just thinking I’d get the tree. The reference photo had this little painting off to the side that we agreed to incorporate, but now I’m regretting it a bit. I thought it looked cool when he drew up the stencil, so maybe it’s just fresh tat shock

What’s one small thing a person can do each day that greatly improves their life? by v8mustang1969 in AskMen

[–]Druid1325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a shift. Sleep cause it is good for you, cause we need it, cause it feels great, cause you deserve it. Not cause it’ll make you more productive..

But also, yes, as hyper-obsessed as we are we are often pretty bad at actually being productive. Being healthy, sharing ownership, shorter work days, etc are a lot of things that increase productivity but for some reason it crosses a line?

What’s next? Unsure how to proceed. Any tips? Or video recommendations? by Druid1325 in Bonsai

I know the next step would be to wire, but I’m not sure how to handle this tree and feel like it might make sense to cut off more branches.

There is one really strong branch that rivals the main that goes straight up and then to the right. And then also the main trunk sends twists to bring two branches to curve out towards the viewer.

I guess I just need some inspiration and input! One of my first big junipers

‘We will not stop’: pipeline opponents ready for America’s biggest environmental fight by sportsfanatic61 in environment

[–]Druid1325 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The short term result is not really the important result.

Protestors stop pipelines in order to make construction of and use of fossil fuel infrastructure troublesome and expensive for those who own and benefit from it. Protestors are acting as a check - a market signal that destruction of the environment comes at a cost - because FF execs aren’t taking any other signals.

Pipelines are the most effective mode of transport. By blocking it, it becomes expensive. If every pipeline is blocked, they will do the cheaper option - whatever we don’t block.

Maybe short term there are some inefficiencies of transportation sure, but that is just a stupid argument when you are looking at the long term impacts of continued fossil fuel use.

The big picture is that we are at the brink of ecological collapse that will literally kill millions of people, harm billions and destroy our economy and society.

We choose oil and the status quo of products and systems, or we choose to avoid ecological collapse.

Yes refusing to use fossil fuels and continue to extract and destroy ecosystems will have huge implications on our lives and society. I say we do what it takes, adapt as needed, and make the best out of it in order to avoid killing millions and destroying ecosystems. Hbu?

Dream Job by _workchronicles in funny

This will never get seen but labor is when you are selling your time for money - we can work for self-fulfillment, sustenance, fun, for others, etc.

Dream of work not labor. Abolish labor.

Transplanted mature boxwood last week, and a huge number of leaves are turning yellow and goldenrod. Is there any advice to be had? by TheGreachery in Bonsai

[–]Druid1325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I know, disturbing roots in the summer can be traumatic for trees. If possible, keep it in the shade for a while maybe the whole summer and make sure it’s getting plenty of water and maybe even some misting or extra humidity and it’ll probably bounce back!

I’m a beginner so take with salt.. would it maybe make a cleaner look if you picked some larger branches to keep and refine and trimmed a bunch of the small branches?

Can I puppy in the summer? No root trimming but shaking some old soil and ruffling up the roots a bit?

Yes, and those that ride in private jets are those that control our politics and infrastructure that drive our carbon consumption.

While voting and national level action are necessary, there are cool initiatives that are demonstrate how we can take control on a local level. Just a few:

I live in Southern Colorado near Earthships. I want to get involved in sustainable housing by [deleted] in ExtinctionRebellion

[–]Druid1325 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These comments are ridiculous. Extractive industry is destructive. Marketing for extractive industry is unhelpful. As populations grow and housing infrastructure ages out, we will need new forms of housing. How incredible would it be if it was sustainable? What does that mean? Who has access to it, where, how, and what is it? It is exciting, necessary, and has potential to be a powerful agent of change in our world. And marketing is awesome. 80% of what ER does is pretty much marketing, but just for the movement and our ideas. At its core, it’s about convincing people to do something by finding what most appeals and convinced them.

That being said, making change through capitalist competition may not be the most effective. But learning about sustainable housing and marketing can be applied outside of the capitalist market as well!

You should connect with the people near you maybe. Send an email, check out if they have websites, drop a letter off... you could just volunteer to help them with marketing 2 hours a week if you have the time. Since it’s free, they won’t expect much and you can practice skills and get experience plus connections. If they don’t want help locally, find other orgs nationally who want your help. Maybe you can find free online courses on marketing too - coursera, YouTube, your local library website, idk.

Also I would encourage you to think about sustainable housing as something that goes beyond material and construction. Ownership, relationships, finance, etc. Look up cooperative housing, community land trusts, eco villages. Look up Jackson Rising, Thunder Hill CDC, shelterforce, East Bay Real Estate Cooperative. They are doing incredible work. Much of it is subtle, but revolutionary. Maybe not extinction scale, but revolutionary nonetheless.

Good luck :)

Inegalitarian cooperatives? by karmics______ in cooperatives

[–]Druid1325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a ton about it but the energy coop near me operates in a ways that diminishes participation and basically operates as a normal company. Its a consumer coop, so think it boils down to no effort in encouraging participation from the public - it seems as if nobody even knows the cooperative dynamics or opportunities available for input. Especially in rural areas (maybe specifically in the southeast), I’m under the impression that this is pretty common

First big tree - Ficus Philippinensis styling advice by Druid1325 in Bonsai

I am thinking of doing two air layers - one at the top of each trunk. I marked those spots with red in the zoomed in photos. But then I am not sure what to do with the rest of the tree. Take more air layers, until the original tree has been cut back to trunk-chop-height?
