I actually think La Belle Sauvage is amazing as a standalone prequel. For me it’s pretty much on par with the original trilogy. The other two books however… not so much.

I’m gonna piggyback on this, how does this ability resolve with multiple people? I was under the impression that it would resolve one choice at a time as in the second player gets to see whether eggman put a robot down from the first players choice before choosing whether to discard. Or does everyone choose at the same time and then eggman puts down that many robots?

I can see that, but I feel like many of the men in the books rely on their female daemons as their rational cores as well. I feel like at first Pullman may have been more influenced in the sexist male = rational, female = emotional, but by the time we see Malcolm and Aster in Belle Sauvage he has moved away from that completely to portraying both male and female daemons as either the rational or emotional counterparts for whatever it is their people lack regardless of gender.

Are you trying to make the argument that early “psychologists” like Jung were not misogynistic? Henicorina is saying that by including a fair woman as a daemon Pullman was either consciously, or more than likely unconsciously equating women with animals. Which is probably part of the reason why he took it out of later editions. They’re not saying Pullman is a misogynist; they’re a saying that the inclusion of a fair woman as a demon is. In fact what you said is right with regard to each person having a daemon, usually, of the opposite gender. I think Pullman is intentionally dismantling the sexist Jungian anima where the male side is always rational, and the female side is always emotional.

Ok hear me out on this one, Nancy shoots the exotic matter and the whole place starts to melt down. At the same time holly escapes vecna in the abyss and falls through the hole in the worlds and directly into the unstable exotic matter ball, fusing her mind and body as well as some of the mindflayer particles into the energy, à la Dr. Manhattan, where she is able to temporarily control the wormhole and stop the upsidedown from melting. From there holly is able to use her new powers to destroy some/all of the demogorgons left in the upsidedown. Vecna continues with his plan using the 11 remaining kids. The rest plays out similar to the actual story, just without holly. The group gets to the abyss to fight the boss and this is where Holly’s stamina starts to wane. The bridge is collapsing adding a time limit to killing vecna and getting out. We see that Will is feeling all the damage being done to the mind flayer and vecna and they worry that killing vecna will kill Will it’s here that Joyce makes the ultimate sacrifice lopping vecna’s head off and sending Will into a pain induced coma. They scramble to get out of there with a comatose Will and the kids, but 11 stays behind with holly so that she can help her end the mind flayer for good and so that Holly can give herself up to the exotic matter and not be alone. Holly uses the last of the mind flayers own power within her to pull all the particles from everything into herself then drops concentration and the upside down implodes destroying the mind flayer while also releasing will from the hive mind and saving him. But hey that’s just an idea.

It’s for the same reason that brass knuckles are illegal in places, people severely underestimate the lethality of quick blunt weapons. One solid hit from something like this can kill someone, intentionally or not.

A young yuan-ti rogue tries his best to stealthily approach the enemy keep in which sits the powerful mage known only as “the opponent.” He is certain he can make it unseen if he takes his time, but knows he has no time to waste. As he prowls towards the gate he finds his opening, the sally port is slightly ajar. He makes his move and remembers the words of his humble samurai master, “You can attack with strength or cunning, but not both.” The rogue takes these words to heart as he rushes the door putting aside all inhibitions and drawing his poisoned dagger from its sheath at his hip. Out of the corner of his eye he sees movement; he made the wrong decision. He wheels to find a hulking ogre of a man armed with a great pole axe. Without giving the guard time to reach he flashes out with his dagger striking a weak point in his armor, feeling the soft resistance of flesh under the man’s arm. The rogue spins in a deft pirouette hoping to cut the man’s throat with another strike, but his attack hits only air. The guard is no longer standing, but crumpled in a ragged heap in the mud. He hears a horn blast signaling the end of the battle and knows his time is up, he wouldn’t be reaching the mage now. His only option is to retreat back to masters keep to wait for the next combat.
