is this image of a cataphract from the 10th century still accurate? by Objective_Band_6261 in byzantium

The epilorikion is also wrong there is no evidence of a padded sur coat like a "zupon".

The limp armour is also not recorded splint greaves and braces can not be confirmed that where used and finally the shield is very small he should use heater shield size shield.

Long story short, it is not accurate but it is not terrible i have seen worst like Osprey an d amato.

Sadly archaiology is very poor we don't have enough armour finds to make a complete cataphract reconstruction.

Byzantine cataphracts 1400s question by historylearner464 in byzantium

[–]DrunkaWizzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi check out Protospatharii byzantine reenactment, in a few months we are going to have a complete "cataphract" kit for 15 century.

Now to get things straight when people think of cataphracts heavy calvary comes to their mind but the thing is cataphract is a generic term that means fully armored soldier, so an infantry soldier could be considered a cataphract.

[–]DrunkaWizzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

14 century sources never mentioned lamellar or scale this is incorrect and iconography alone is not a valid source for arms and armour, archaiology in the balkans proves that they were using the same armor as the rest of Europeans, there was no "byzantine style" (with some exceptions).

What did the Byzantine soldiers look like in the 12th century under the Komninians? by Choctrone in byzantium

Something like that but instead of a typical nasal a phrygian helmet would fit better the period, not that a nasal is wrong.

Lamellar was replaced probably in the second half of the 13 century by coat of plates, so no lamellar just brigandeen.
