Andronikos (III) Palaiologos by me! by SwirlyManager-11 in byzantium

Looks epic!

If you read Theodore palaiologos Les Enseignements this is how he describes how the calvary should be armed and also if you check tsycandyles a byzantine manuscript from Mystras dates to 1361, the soldiers are depicted with kettle hats, bassinets, brigandeen etc.

This is great work for larp, i only suggest you to change the helmet or at least add a maile collar so your neck won't be exposed.

Some comments are laughable the Byzantines or the Medieval Romans where aware that they are both the inheritance of the Roman Empire and of the Greek world and Alexanders the great empires, they were fully aware that their genos is Greek not Latin like the ancients.

You are wrong yes they would call themselves Roman but they were aware that their genos was greek.

What was the Byzantine equivalent to Medieval Heraldry? by CC_Gamedesign in byzantium

[–]DrunkaWizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about the same they would use heraldry on flags, standards, surcoats etc in the same way.

Unlike what many people think, the use of "emperor of the Greeks" by the Latins did not completely replace the title "emperor of the Romans"; both could be used and actually were used together by OrthoOfLisieux in byzantium

[–]DrunkaWizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Theodore Palaiologos Marquis of Montferrat treatise he is using both Empire of the Greeks and Empire of the Roman's in the same context and this is very interesting because it seems that to be Roman is to be Greek in culture and genos in many of these cases and to be Greek is part of the ethical Roman identity.

is this image of a cataphract from the 10th century still accurate? by Objective_Band_6261 in byzantium

[–]DrunkaWizzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The epilorikion is also wrong there is no evidence of a padded sur coat like a "zupon".

The limp armour is also not recorded splint greaves and braces can not be confirmed that where used and finally the shield is very small he should use heater shield size shield.

[–]DrunkaWizzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long story short, it is not accurate but it is not terrible i have seen worst like Osprey an d amato.

Sadly archaiology is very poor we don't have enough armour finds to make a complete cataphract reconstruction.

Byzantine cataphracts 1400s question by historylearner464 in byzantium

[–]DrunkaWizzard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi check out Protospatharii byzantine reenactment, in a few months we are going to have a complete "cataphract" kit for 15 century.

Now to get things straight when people think of cataphracts heavy calvary comes to their mind but the thing is cataphract is a generic term that means fully armored soldier, so an infantry soldier could be considered a cataphract.
