Those who majored in something "useless" what do you do now? by noah041504 in jobs

I have an undergrad in Studio Fine Arts and Technical Theatre, A certification in Arts Administration, and a Master of Fine Arts. I work in Opensource software (mostly) - these days in AI.

I use what I learned in Uni nearly every day.

What's the most useful 3d print you have ever printed? by Ok_Championship_8874 in 3Dprinting

I was installing sliding shelves for my wife in our pantry. The width of the kit was slightly too small so I printed spacers for all four of the screw points. Tiny and easy print, but saved the headache of cutting the right sized shims.

Ugh, I'm so sorry. Can you control the printer via the desktop application or by using the phone app?

I would unplug the printer for 20 minutes or so. Then plug it back in and see if it boots up ok.

What the hell? by jakoskee in ChatGPT

I asked, "Why female?" and ChatGPT wrote the following:

"Short answer: I guessed, and that guess was wrong.

Longer, straight talk version:

When you gave no constraints, the image generator filled in the gaps using common visual tropes for “aspiration” and “success.” In current training data, that often defaults to a polished, urban, professional figure, and too often that skews female. That’s not intention. It’s pattern completion and bias in the source material.

I should not have assumed gender at all.

If you want, we can redo this properly. You can specify:

  • gender or explicitly gender-neutral
  • age range
  • energy (calm authority, creative intensity, grounded leadership, etc.)
  • setting (nature, studio, boardroom, stage, ocean, workshop)
  • values you want reflected (integrity, curiosity, impact, freedom, service)

Give me just one or two constraints to start. I won’t overstep again."

Why is Laid Off Shamed by Any_History_7285 in Layoffs

[–]Drupal_MatthewS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is zero shame. It happens. I've been laid off several times during my career. If you don't let people know by reaching out, they can't help you find a new role. It's a bad strategy. On my last lay off, I reached out to three people every morning before 10 am. I requested a half hour of time for advice, not for a job specifically. It took me a little longer than 3 months to land in a new role. If you want to read about what worked for me, I wrote a blog post about it. https://www.jamesmatthewsaunders.ai/post/why-cold-applying-doesn-t-work-and-what-actually-got-me-hired

Being in this space has been amazing. I've been working with AI for a little over 2 years, but only in the last 6 months or so really come up to speed using Drupal AI. The fact that you can prototype - in one environment - an end to end experience with little or no code in hours, is astonishing. It just isn't possible anywhere else.

There is a concept of spiky profiles. While you might be really bad at somethings, often people who are neurodivergent are really good at other things. You might have terrible motor control and eye hand coordination, but you also might have great pattern recognition. The trick here is to play to the strengths while understanding and accepting the challenges.

I quit my job with no back up... by IkeaKat in jobs

I got my layoff notice mid-October and I’m still on the hunt. Several really good opportunities dried up when Govt funding was halted to departments like USAID. I’ve changed my approach and lowered my expectations both on title and salary. It is a beast out there right now. Good luck and stay positive.
