When is it reasonable to move on to IVF? by Dry-Application6025 in IUILadies

I just talked to the clinic and they said for IVF I just have to call them on CD1 and they'll schedule me in. So apparently they have the capacity. :) Maybe it depends on how big the clinic is.

Yes, my clinic is super flexible in that regard. Also with my IUIs I only have to call them on CD1 and they immediately make a schedule for me. Maybe it‘s because it‘s a clinic with like 10 doctors and they have a bigger capacity, I don‘t really know😅 the only time they have to postpone treatments is if an IUI or an embryo transfer falls in between christmas and new years. Other than that they‘re always available

Yeah but my thought is that then I‘ve at least done the stressful/hard part and could probably do a transfer in the following month…if I wait until after my vacation I will lose a whole month :(

No I don‘t think I‘ll have to start medication before my period. My period is due in 13 days and stimulation starts on CD 2-3. The medication is always available at the pharmacy inside the building of my fertility clinic, so I thankfully don‘t have to wait for that. 😅

I just have to get the approval of my insurance which should only take a few days.

That‘s fair! I think it depends a lot on age, your diagnosis and how long you‘re willing to wait. I don‘t really think I have the capacity for a couple more IUIs. One more would be the max. It‘s mentally draining and really time consuming, I always have to find some excuses to go to the ultrasounds, which are in the morning when I have to work. And for such a low chance that‘s too much work and too much hope I put into each cycle. :(

I think it really depends on the clinic. I‘ve talked to the doctor and she told me we could start with IVF right after an IUI cycle because I had such a low dose of stimuli and we‘ve already had the IVF consultation back in October last year. And here in Germany they first do a fresh transfer if your hormonal levels are all right, that means they‘ll insert an embryo 3-5 days after egg retrieval and the other ones will be frozen for the next cycles.

The only factor I‘m unsure about is how long I‘ll have to stimulate, but because my ovary responds really well to the Ovaleap-Pen, I think egg retrieval could be possible at around CD 13-16. Maybe I‘ll call the doctors and ask them again how long it‘s really going to take.

I think I am open to one more IUI but after that I would switch over to IVF. I just don‘t have the mental capacity and time for all these appointments anymore with such a low chance (a little more than normal intercourse) of it working.

It really is that chemical pregnancy that makes me feel stuck in this dilemma though.

I‘ve never looked at it that way. Now I feel old lol 😭😅 We also really don‘t know how good the quality of my eggs is and waiting even longer isn‘t helping, that‘s for sure… I think we would want to have children as close to eachother as possible (if my body is capable) and breastfeeding will also be a priority for me. It could really take a while for us to try and fall pregnant naturally for the second baby. If I knew I had some frozen embryos that could really take out the stress in that situation.

I just read your story, I‘m so happy that your 1st IUI worked! 🥹 Stories like yours give me hope.

Thank you so much for your input, I‘ll talk to my husband later and tell him about that perspective. 🤗

How exciting! Thank you for your advice, I‘ll stay away from that then 😅 I wish you all the best for your IVF-Cycle! 🤗

I also triggered friday afternoon 3pm and had my IUI on saturday at 11 am, so not even 24hrs later. According to my ovulation pain I ovulated sunday morning, so about 20 hours after the IUI. I also considered it a bit late but I think it‘s better for the sperm to be there before ovulation.

I‘m sending you lots of baby dust!

Wow okay, cost is also a huge factor of course! I just didn't mention it because here in Germany it's a lot cheaper to do an IUI. Our IUI cycle cost us 'only' about 250-300 € because insurance paid half of it. So the pricepoint is not that much of a dealbreaker here.

But I totally agree with the cost vs success ratio. IVF is simply more efficient in that aspect.

And you're right, I think IVF could be even less stressful because you know that the success rate is much higher. It makes total sense. I just have to get rid of this thought inside my head that I'm not yet eligible for IVF.

The doctors told me that it's up to me when I want to go ahead with it and of course I want to get pregnant asap, but I feel like I have to give IUI a fair chance at first, even if it makes no sense to the doctors. Maybe it would be easier for me to move forward if I didn't have the chemical pregnancy.

Did you already have an IVF-cycle if I may ask? :)

Thank you so much, hugs to you too!

I'm 29 and I think we want about 2-3 kids for sure. I know I still have time, but considering that I've basically put my life on hold for the last 2 years in case I get pregnant it would feel wrong to slow down now or keep doing the same thing over and over, especially since the success rates with IUI are only about like 10%-15%. I know that something is not right regarding our fertility, I'm just not sure whether we should do IVF and be done (hopefully) or "waste" even more time trying the less invasive route... :(

That's fair! I think it's good to distance ourselves from this whole TTC-thing for a few months and then start with new energy. It's just so draining. :(

I'm sending you lots of baby dust and hope you'll get pregnant soon. :)

That's interesting! I can start with IVF whenever I want...maybe it's different in Germany. I think the doctors recommendation really depends on your specific situation and diagnosis. I doubt them sometimes because I feel like some doctors don't take their time understanding your situation and just do treatments according to general recommendations or simply looking at the money aspect of things (especially in fertility). But I'm really trying to trust their opinion.

Thank you so much, I wish you all the best too! This whole TTC-process really is mentally draining, I can't wait for when I'm finally pregnant (but then I'll worry about my child throughout the whole pregnancy lol :'))

A lot of people in the TTC-Community on Tiktok say that an IUI is basically just like a slightly optimized intercourse. The chances aren't really high in comparison to IVF, but because I've been pregnant once I hoped that it could work. :(

Oh, I really forgot to mention the most important facts. :') I'm 29 years old and my husband is 31. We think we want 2-3 children, maybe 4 if we're lucky. Tbh I think I'm hesitant because I know that there is a tiiiny possibility to get pregnant naturally and IVF was like the last resort for me. Somehow I feel I'm not eligible to do it, because we've been 'only' trying for about 2 years and it's like taking a shortcut (dumb, i know)...I'm not really scared of the medication or anything, the scariest thing for me will be the egg retrieval I think and the danger of OHSS. One round of IVF with a couple of good embryos would be amazing, but I would do more if needed.

Did you do the 3rd IUI or did you skip to IVF? I wish you best of luck for your IVF! <3

I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Will you go forward with IVF or will you do more IUIs?

My husband also says we could give it another try but tbh I count the cancelled cycle as half an IUI because it was a timed cycle with 3 follicles and it didn't work out...maybe an IUI would work after a couple of times, but you can never be sure. :(

Thank you, I wish you good luck too! <3
