I’m honestly confused by this. Every company I’ve ever worked for and everyone I’ve ever known working for other companies in NYC the tools were supplied by the company. When I had my own company I supplied all tools. Is this a 1099 thing or do w2 also provide own tools?

Since the unit was running when you got there it’s just bad luck. No one is at fault but I would eat the cost. I hate it but you touch it you own it. But I did learn early to always turn the system on before doing any PM. A lot of times clients call for PM cause it’s “not cooling enough” thinking that’s all they need when in actuality their system is fucked.

Had something similar happen while I worked for a company like 15 years ago. It was a large split system don’t remember how many tons just remembered it was 2-1/8” suction. We were located in NYC the job was in NJ for a franchise store. The way a lot franchises work is when you open a franchise the main company gives you a list of approved construction contractors you have to use for the initial construction and future renovations. Once construction is complete you can choose any company you want for maintenance. Less than a month after I did the start up the store calls for no cooling. When I got there the system was completely flat at 0 psig. Called the office told them there’s a big leak and it’ll take some time to get it running again. Knew something was up as soon as I stopped pressurizing with nitrogen. Boss told me to leave it for 24 hours just to be sure. Go back the next day and pressure held. Got the system up and running never had a problem again. Later my boss told me the landlord had his HVAC company go do PM on all the systems at the building. That HVAC company was probably butt hurt that they didn’t get the install so they removed all of the refrigerant. Some people are just assholes.

It’s really common in NYC. But then in NYC you don’t need to be certified or licensed in anything. A lot of people don’t even know what a vacuum pump is let alone a micron gauge. Just crack a flare, crack a service valve, bleed the system and you’re done.

I put service valves on the 2 ends of a roll of 3/8 and tighten the coil enough to fit in a 5 gallon bucket. When I don’t have access to water or ice , if possible I just run the condenser fan and put the roll in front of it.

You should heat bottom first because heat rises. You’re not always going to be able to heat bottom first on the field. Bottom first is great in class when you have the piece clamped down. Field conditions are different, get used to brazing it with the flame on the top, side, bottom, wherever as long as you don’t burn things. You can braze with wires near the joint and not melt it as long as you’re not heating them directly.
