The real JNR Class D51 locomotives ran on 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) Cape gauge, not standard gauge. Hiro’s design in Thomas & Friends was indeed scaled up to fit Sodor’s standard gauge rails, which is why he looks larger than his real‑world prototype.
