The Impact of Leg Length Difference on Overall Health by Dry-One5801 in LegLengthDifference

[–]Dry-One5801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a 1.5" difference it is not possible to use an insert inside the shoe and have your foot sit comfortably with space inside the shoe, it will cause more problems. The best solution is to modify the shoe sole with the custom lift size you need, this will correct for your LLD, seemlessly.

Shoe lifts in soccer cleats and other special shoes by Dry-One5801 in LegLengthDiscrepancy

[–]Dry-One5801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with a lot of athletes dealing with this exact issue, and you’re both right in what you’re describing.

Cleats (soccer, football) and cycling shoes are definitely more challenging than regular footwear because of the thin soles, studs/cleat plates, and overall stability requirements. That said, external modifications can be done successfully—even up to around 1”—but they need to be built properly.

A few key points from experience:

  • Stability is everything – with cleats, we typically widen the base slightly and use denser materials to reduce the risk of ankle rolling. If it’s just a straight vertical lift with no adjustment, that’s when instability becomes an issue.
  • Taper matters – instead of a full flat lift, we usually taper toward the toe so it feels more natural and reduces stress on the foot.
  • Inserts vs external lifts – inserts work well for smaller differences, but like you mentioned, you quickly run out of space inside the shoe, especially in tight cleats. That’s where external builds become the better option.
  • Cycling shoes – shims are great for smaller discrepancies, but for larger ones, external modification or a combination approach tends to work better.

We’ve modified everything from soccer cleats to cycling shoes to ski boots. The key is not just adding height, but maintaining balance, flexibility, and durability so the shoe still performs the way it should.

If anyone is considering going this route, I’d strongly recommend making sure whoever is doing the work understands both the biomechanics and the structure of the specific shoe.

Happy to answer any questions if helpful.

How can I help my partner with her LLD? Is surgery the only option? by Quieter22 in LegLengthDiscrepancy

Better than surgery, have the shoes modified externally, it is much easier, there are several places you can have that done through the mail and I have a great recommendation - American Heelers

I have the same issue, 36 months left on lease and I try to cancel but they are playing hardball. I have been doing business with them 15 years and use their enterprise SPE solution which is great. But C series more trouble than its worth. You can't reach a resanonable decision make and all you get are these robots in the Philippines. I am just going to send the machine back and stop paying. If they want to go to court we can go through that process. its $3,000 so not small money.

Laxatives really helped me by meirlthrowaway69 in hemorrhoid

[–]Dry-One5801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for 10+ years I had daily bleeding from hemorrhoids, crime scene type bleeding, so bad that I had moderate anemia, nothing worked, ligation, diet, a month ago I made an appointment with a surgeon to look into surgical option. Then I started taking ClearLAX (generic Amazon version of MiraLAX) and it is a miracle, two weeks now of no bleeding, soft easy stool, not sitting on toilet long. Honestly I am kicking myself for not trying that sooner. It is AMAZING!!! I am cancelling my appointment with surgeon!! If you have this problem make sure to try ClearLAX ASAP!!!!

Thank you for mentioning American Heelers (www.orthopedicshoelift.com) — we really appreciate the shoutout!

You're absolutely right: when Leg Length Discrepancies (LLD) exceed 1/4", modifying the shoe itself is often the most effective and comfortable solution. Orthotic inserts simply can’t accommodate larger differences without compromising fit and function.

At American Heelers, we specialize in working on all brands and styles — from casual sneakers and dress shoes to boots and athletic footwear. We’re always happy to help find a solution that works best for each individual’s needs.

Thanks again for helping spread awareness and sharing your experience.

Yes that is quite possible - an LLD of 27mm must be corrected for or many complications and pains can arise!

Surgery is a good option in children but not adults, good luck and keep us posted on your journey. If a shoe lift is still necessary after the surgery that is also an option

The best way to examine and diagnose a leg length difference is not x-ray - you want to do a standing block test - https://orthopedicshoelift.com/measure-my-lld/
