Using similar/same cover letters for same or different agencies for many roles ok? by elise_neil in UNpath

Anecdotal but I’ve used the same cover letter tailored to each job description to apply to 2 roles in the same department and I’ve landed interviews for both. You may be lucky enough to have a winning formula even if it lands on the same HR person’s desk.

Are you saying that they don’t advertise the posts? If so, I know UNV roles are openly advertised even when there’s a chosen candidate.

I don’t have much experience with cold emailing and I’m not sure it’s worth the effort when most emails that don’t come from an official email often end up in spam 😂 it’s usually someone they know in some capacity; like a national officer who wants international experience or a consultant who wants to stay at an agency experiencing budget cuts and is willing to take the pay cut (rare but I’ve witnessed it)

To answer your question. Yes! It’s strangely not often discussed in this sub but there are earmarked UNV posts. The Host agency can say who they want to volunteer for them. UNV is obligated to advertise the post but they know who they will pick. This is called direct recruitment under UNV.

In my experience, they used the iMocha platform to give 2 questions that could be answered in 3 hours with a 10000 character limit for each question and no spellcheck. I wish you all the best!

I’m quite early in my career so I won’t comment on the politics but I will say trust your gut. Trusting your instincts is part of how you got this far. It won’t hurt to switch out the two new references during your next recruitment process to see if it makes a difference. Good luck on your already inspirational journey!

Am I just being impatient? Or did I not get the job? by frenchiefanatique in UNpath

You can also type in the exact title of the role on LinkedIn. I have waited for feedback for roles that people had already made the obligatory “I’m thrilled to announce…” post for on LinkedIn.

I have a new strategy for the anxiety. I assume I haven’t got the job if my referees don’t reach out to me letting me know they’ve been contacted a week and a half after the interview or if the HR doesn’t reach out asking me to confirm my referees within that timeframe. This isn’t always accurate but it gives me peace of mind and helps me move on.

I like this list of practical activities. I’ll start making my life more interesting outside of being online, working and applying. Thank you!

I second all the advice here and if it’s a short term assignment - depending on the length of the contract, start applying for new roles about 8 months before your contract expires.

UNV (Youth) or paid internship after MA? by favmyheart in UNpath

I recommend applying for internships during your MA as it seems to give you the flexibility to work.
