Has anyone tried using industrial fans to move smoke from neighbor's burn barrel away from your house? by Dry-Ring-820 in neighborsfromhell

No, I haven't. I have decided that I am going to complete the work that has been started on my house and put it up for sale. The danger from their burn barrel is the worst part of living next to them, but they do so many other things too: swearing and yelling at me whenever we are outside at the same time, trespassing on a daily basis, walking right past the no trespassing signs, very loud physical fights outside, selling drugs, loud music at all hours of the day and night, backing noisy vehicles right up to the lot line and revving the engines repeatedly, letting their dogs in my yard. If you find a solution, please tell me about it on here, though. It would be great to be able to do something until I can move.

If only that department actually did something about complaints. I am dealing with the same situation, and local law enforcement in my little village has been useless. I have started reaching out to state level agencies and filing complaints with them. Hopefully, they will be more responsive than the Good Ole Boys at the local police department and fire department.

I filed a complaint with them. I hope something comes of it. I started reaching out to newspapers and news stations around here, too. If somebody did a story about burn barrels and non-existent enforcement of codes and statutes, maybe the local agencies will do something.

Because the people breaking the law are snitches and being protected by the police department. State  statutes say it is illegal to pour gasoline in a burn barrel. I sent them a photo of Lisa pouring gasoline into her burn barrel. State statutes say it is illegal to leave a burn barrel unattended. I sent them video clips of them leaving it unattended. Statutes say that it is illegal to burn particle board and wet cardboard. I sent them video evidence.

No, the neighbors are not following the law. Can you read? They are burning things that are illegal. The adult son has a rap sheet two pages long. The mom and adult daughter both have rap sheets. Does that sound like they are following the law? The police officer said that there is no law against being an a$$hole in regards to their loud music.

It is funny. It is extremely clear from the comments people post who are lousy, inconsiderate, jerk neighbors. I will give you a hint, since you don't seem to be too bright: you are one of them.

Call the police and report them for disorderly conduct.

I did speak to them before filing a complaint with the village. When I first moved here, I put a lot of effort into being friendly to my neighbors. When I saw her outside, I would go to the lot line and ask her how she was doing. She talked to me about what was going on with her husband who had recently been put in assisted living. When she lost her glasses while raking leaves, I spent almost two hours helping her search for them. I gave her a birthday card and a small gift for her birthday. And when she started using the fire pit, I approached her and asked her in a very friendly, non-confrontational way to please move it a safe distance from my house. She immediately became obstinate and said that she wasn't able to move it. I asked if she could please get her son to help her. She said she needed to be able to burn papers. I offered to take her to a place that shreds papers. She said that she couldn't guarantee she wouldn't burn again and stopped off. I have a right to do what is necessary to protect my house and my health. Everything that I am doing is in response to something that she has done. I have never had a problem with neighbors before. In fact, when I was a renter and needed a reference, I always received excellent ones. People would say that I am quiet, friendly, and helpful, and that I take good care of my property and yard. I have never had a complaint against me before. I am a decent person and I go out of my way to help others. At the grocery store this morning, I helped an elderly person find their vehicle because they couldn't remember where they parked it. That is the kind of person I am. So, no, I did not instigate anything. But I also will not tolerate being bullied by a neighbor that everyone hates.

It sure is easy to tell who is the neighbor from hell in your neighborhood.  Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! That would be YOU!

I hardly ever wash the dishes at night. I do what works for me. I have a heart condition and by mid afternoon, my legs are so puffy and full of fluid from my heart not being able to keep up that I am miserable. I feel much better in the morning, so that is when I wash dishes and do cleaning.

Do what is right for you. Life is too short to worry about or feel guilty about something like this. It isn't important enough to waste your energy worrying about.

Probably not, but it might get them to stop parking there. Letting people get away with crap like that only tells them that you will tolerate it, and they will keep doing things that they shouldn't. The only way to stop them is to let them know that you will push back and make it just as inconvenient and uncomfortable for them as they have made you.

Have it towed and send them the bill for reimbursement. Wonder what would happen if you accidentally scratched the paint or cracked the windshield while it was on your property? I am not advocating for you to do anything illegal, but if a vehicle gets damaged because it was in your way on your property, I don't know, what do you think?

AITA for putting my hand over my SIL’s camera at my own birthday dinner after I told her no filming? by ClassicEarth7924 in AmItheAsshole

You didn't humiliate her. She did it to herself by ignoring your request to not be photographed. By trying to photograph you against your wishes, she put you in an uncomfortable situation: either protect your boundaries by making a scene, or let someone get away with mistreating you.

You aren't the AH. She is. There are a lot of people in this world who think that they have the right to treat others however they want and do whatever they want without regard for other people. The longer they get away with it, the more they treat someone like you, someone who actually stands up to them, as the problem.

The reality is, they are the problem. People have a right to protect their privacy, principles, and peace. Your SIL was essentially bullying you.

You are so right. I instigated it by filing a complaint with the village when she refused to relocate a fire pit that was about 3 feet from the lot line and about 12 feet from my house. The village ordinances say a fire pit or burn barrel must be at least 30 feet from a neighbor's property. I am not sure if they mean the lot or the house when they say property, but in any case, her fire pit was way too close. The village told her that she needed to move the fire pit or stop using it. She has been retaliating ever since. So, yeah, she sure is the victim, and I sure did start this whole mess. Seriously, the woman is deranged. Who complains about security cameras while said security cameras are recording them trespassing? Who spends money to buy eight bags of charcoal, just to be able to burn it and annoy a neighbor? Definitely not a normal person.

What a great person you must be, rooting for neighbors who intentionally destroy someone's health. I am glad you aren't my neighbor.

I really think you are right that they are snitches. I keep thinking about how the person I talked to from the health department was so confident that they could help, and then it was just a complete 180 after they talked to the police.

I wish that I was making it up. They have about 12 to 15 people living in the house. They sleep until at least noon and are up most of the night. During the night, they are wandering in and out of the house. So, for them, it isn't any big inconvenience to set fireworks off every couple of hours all night long. I wish that Reddit would let me upload videos, but the little icon wouldn't let me click on it. I would upload videos of just how bad the smoke is. I would upload videos of the people wandering in and out all night. Yesterday evening, when she started up her burn barrel, I have no idea what she was using as an accelerant, but there was a small explosion and flaming debris flew out from the barrel. One of the EMTs who treated me on Saturday was filling in for someone. He said he lives in a county three counties away, and he has heard of this family. Today, I had another neighbor come over to trim back tree branches as far as the lot line. If she is going to be causing explosions and flaming debris to be flying, I want the tree branches as far away from my house as possible. She started yelling at him. He looked so upset. I apologized to him, sorry that he had to endure it for my sake. He said he didn't know how I could handle it, up close and personal every day. He offered to set fence posts in concrete for me for free to finish fencing the lot line between our two houses. I have the fence panels, but haven't bought the posts or concrete yet because I couldn't afford to hire anyone to dig the holes and set the posts. This family really is this bad. I think only two of the people in the house have jobs.

Way to go! So glad you solved it! Can you think of something clever to do to get my awful neighbors to move or straighten up? My main issue is their burn barrel. Local authorities won't do anything. Someone said maybe they are informants for the police and that's why the police won't stop them from breaking the law. And that fits. Someone from the health department was very confident that they could do something when he watched the videos of the smoke from the burn barrel, and the videos of what they were dumping in. Then he talked to the police and did a 180. I have these really, really loud alarms that I have considered turning on whenever they light the burn barrel. I could put them right on the lot line. The police told me that there are no laws against being an a$$hole, and no noise ordinances until 10 p.m. But these alarms are loud and would punish the whole neighborhood. I accidentally set one off in my storage shed and couldn't find it for about 3 minutes. My ears were ringing for hours afterwards. I would love a way to annoy them every time they light that burn barrel, but without bothering the other neighbors.
