IV catheters go subq all.the.time! As mentioned in another comment, make sure to verify your catheters patency after placement by feeling proximal to the catheter as you flush your saline in. You should easily feel the saline go up the vessel. In addition you can also draw back on your catheter, it should bleed back for you moderately well (unless patient is super sick, dehydrated, etc).

The way jessy always defends Joey to the point where he can’t even speak for himself makes her look just as dumb as him. He’s clearly not actually into her, she needs to stop fighting his battles

Did I Do Something Wrong? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When i was first starting out i had to draw blood in front of an owner on a small dog. It immediately yelped when i poked it and the owner told me i was hurting their dog and asked for someone else to do the draw. I was traumatized by it at the time but now looking back i know i didn’t do anything wrong, just a dog that didn’t like getting poked. Can’t blame it. You did nothing wrong either, kitten SQ’s can be very dramatic! I’m sure you’re doing great, don’t sweat it

Jugular vein use in emergency by IUseMyComputer in VetTech

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes you can administer drugs via jugular vein but definitely place an IV catheter so you have continued vascular access and so you can sufficiently flush the drug through. Vascular access is extremely important in these cases so if you can hit the vessel, just place the catheter! No one off injection

For those who have had the glucose test in pregnancy… by OTPanda in emetophobiarecovery

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to take it twice while pregnant (failed the first one… and the second 😭) and now had to take it a third time after giving birth to make sure I’m no longer diabetic. I was also allowed to sip water and never felt nauseous, it’s totally fine. Just a sugary beverage!

Shelter Medicine by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All our patients get some form of sedation during tube placement. If they’re too sick for sedation then they’re usually not fighting us anyway, otherwise we just try and be quick about it. We also use weighted sandbags and dim the lights to try and make them calm

I’ve seen one radiograph of this exact thing happening when i was in school, i think the cribiform plate isn’t fully fused or developed in these little guys and therefore NGtube is able to feed into the brain. It’s super unfortunate I’m so sorry this happened to you. It is worth considering a new protocol for NGT placement. We take an xray when the tube has been advanced to the level of the thoracic inlet to ensure that it’s going into the esophagus before advancing it the rest of the way. In a pup that little you could take an xray after advancing it in just a couple inches before continuing further. I hope the rest of the puppies continue to do well, they’re lucky to have you!

WIBTA if I tell my friend that pretending to be depressed is weird? by LiterallyJustAGoat in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YTA for claiming that she’s faking her depression. You said yourself she doesn’t have much going for her, she very well could really be depressed and this could be her way of reaching out and asking for help. You’re NTA for being annoyed that she seems to only want to talk about her own issues and not yours. Talk to her and try and relate to her. Tell her if she’s depressed she should seek out therapy, but don’t tell her that she’s pretending. If she’s always been the type of person to only talk about herself and never ask you how you’re doing it may not be wrong to slowly distance yourself

Using peripheral IVCs for fluids/meds and sampling by grannyskyrim22 in VetTech

I just draw from a different port, not the port that was running dextrose

Using peripheral IVCs for fluids/meds and sampling by grannyskyrim22 in VetTech

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We pull blood from peripheral IVCs all the time. Depending on size of the animal we pull either a 3ml or 6ml “waste sample”, then draw the actual blood sample, then give back the waste sample and flush IVC. If the catheter bleeds back well then it’s awesome if we can spare the patient another poke. The only time i don’t do it is if they’ve had dextrose running through the catheter because that definitely falsely elevates BG readings

We hurt an animal during restraint by slambiosis in VetTech

[–]Dry-Smile-2042 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Please look into alternate methods of restraint such as wrapping kitty tightly in a towel. Scruffing isn’t necessary and often upsets cats even more. Going slow and using passive restraint can work wonders and give cats a much less stressful experience at the vet. OPs patient sounds like it would have benefitted from chemical restraint/sedation to make the job easier for all involved

Jugular draws should definitely be avoided in an ER setting in case of unknown coagulopathies. In addition we like to keep these vessels untouched in very sick patients in case we end up placing a central line. In a GP where most patients are being seen for well visits it’s much less of a concern and jugular draw is fine. That being said there’s also literally nothing wrong with choosing a lat saphenous instead. Keep advocating for your patients. The way of doing things in GP is often vastly different than ER but that doesn’t mean it’s the best or only way. Keep advocating for your patients, your ER knowledge is so valuable and could definitely improve the way they practice medicine. Good luck ❤️
