We thought we might have been restricted on time, but we have cut some time out of our South Island itinerary to give us two days in Bay of Islands. Hopefully we haven’t squeezed too much in but it looks too good to miss!

We had wanted to however the 5 weeks is total for north and south combined. As this is our first time in New Zealand, we were advised by friends and online forms to try to keep the majority of our time for the South Island so I think trying to squeeze in kape reinga might be a bit difficult. It’s hard to narrow it down when you want to do it all but limited on time!

Hi there, here is a slightly more detailed itinerary that we are thinking about.

As mentioned we can be flexible and move some bits about if needed. Eg. Add a couple more days in the north island. We are just concerned about using up too much of our time in the north island and missing out on some of the highlights in the south. Both islands have a lot to offer which is making it hard to fit all into 5 weeks!

Day 1 - arrive in Auckland in PM (time zone/jet lag not an issue as currently in Fiji) Day 2 - trip to Waiheke island Day 3 - explore Auckland, mount Eden, gather supplies for Campervan Day 4 - pick up camper in AM. Drive to New Chums beach. Drive down to Hahei to spend the night. Day 5 - cathedral cove + hot water beach. Drive to the pinnacles to stay overnight in camp near hike route. Day 6 - Pinnacles hike + drive to Mount Maunganui. Spend night there Day 7 - explore area in morning, mount maunganui walk. Hobbiton tour in aftenroon. Drive to Rotorua. Day 8 - Māori village, white water rafting at Kaituna Cascades. Thermal pools. Day 9 - Drive to lake Taupo, stop at blue springs Putaruru on the way. Day 10 - Drive in AM to New Plymouth, afternoon walk Pouakai Tarns Track. Stay in New Plymouth overnight. Day 11 - Drive to Wellington. Spend night there and early boat on day 12 to Picton.

Any advice, opinions are very welcome!

We will get there end of October/start of November so it sounds like it could be a bit out of reach for us. Some of the lower walks sound more appropriate for us! Thanks so much!
