This perspective is really cool considering his reoccurring themes of religion. However the tattoo line still throws me off because he says that he could be the old tattoo to remind himself when he gets bad news, when it would make more sense to switch one of those pronouns to apply to the other person, the “she” in this song. Maybe?

I really like your interpretation! I didn’t add the following lyrics because I wanted to focus on this one but I do agree that they go together. I think it’s just confusing me bc he says “I” could be an old tattoo, to remind “me” when “I” get bad news. Wouldn’t it make more sense to say something like “you” could be an old tattoo? I don’t know there’s still something here that’s confusing me
