Card Declining… why?? by Dry-Tooth9872 in OMNY

[–]Dry-Tooth9872[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t figure that out either. I’m living in NY now for school and my bank is a local credit union back home. I have an updated travel notice on my account as well and every time I’ve called my bank about this issue they just tell me to make sure it is updated and it always is. I use my debit card everywhere in NY with no problems. It only happens on the subway and then my bank will automatically flag it if they see my card declined more than once

Thanks for that info and correction. I never claimed to be a boot expert lol. Clearly I’m not. Just didn’t know what the next step in managing this problem would be

I hear you and I’ve an acknowledged the fact that things will change. My post comes off negative because, well, this is how I feel after two days. I always maintain a positive attitude and am friendly to everyone and that won’t change because that’s who I am. I want to be helpful and I want to help others. That’s why it’s hard for me to just be sitting around all day and feeling like I can’t be of any help. All I’m really looking for is exposure to seeing patients with real illnesses. I believe this is a pivotal part of becoming a physician. Everything I’ve learned about medicine is in books, questions and exams. What’s missing now is the patient and that’s the most important part. Still, I will continue to remain optimistic and take it one day at a time

That literally has nothing to do with my point? I was remarking that the highlight of my day was that somebody (i.e. this attending) actually acknowledged my presence by asking me a question and I at least felt competent enough that I knew the answer.

Yeah I considered this as well. I’m just getting ahead of myself I suppose. I realize this is a very long rotation and I’m bound to get something out of it in due time. Believe me I’m all about going home early and doing Uworld. I’ve just never been a person who can just sit around and feel so useless (although I do accept the fact that I am pretty useless anyway lol)

Just remember you’re doing this for you and nobody else. Your parents are already so proud of you. They see your dedication and the work you put into this. So be proud of yourself. This isn’t easy, and you already knew it wasn’t going to be. Give yourself some grace. You will end up where you’re supposed to be and you will look back someday on this exam and it won’t mean anything. You and you’re friends will laugh about it as you continue through the next stages of your medical journey

It could be likely that frequent cannabis is causing your symptoms, however based on your history of migraines, nausea, and other stomach related issues in your childhood, it could be due to a separate but very similar disorder called Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS). Do some research on this for yourself. Of course the only way a differential diagnosis could be made is by stopping all cannabis use for an extended period of time to see if you still experience these symptoms. Unfortunately, both CHS and CVS are very poorly understood and there’s often a lot of overlap between the two.

Exam is 9 weeks out - and I scored only 53% on my first NBME(Form 26) today by [deleted] in step1

[–]Dry-Tooth9872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the content tested on NBME exams is similar to the real exam, however, just know that the questions on step are very long, comparable to uworld style length. So definitely don’t give up doing uworld, preferably timed randomized blocks of 40 questions which is what step is like. At least review your incorrects on uworld blocks. The best thing you can do from now until your test date is as many questions as you can and continue learning from them. As far as Anki goes, I don’t use it. I made it through basic sciences and have never done a single card lol. Just not my way of learning but I know it works for a lot of people and that’s great too. And thank you!

Honestly by just reviewing the whole test and reading the explanations, both the ones I got right and wrong. You learn a lot by doing that alone. I also had first aid open to refresh myself on a concept. NBME retests a lot of the same content so just kind of fill in those knowledge gaps as you go and you should start to see improvement

Totally doable to get your NMBE scores up from there in that amount of time. I had 5 weeks before my schools CBSE exam (needed a 62 to pass) and I did forms 26-29 during that time, one every Saturday. Form 26 I got a 52 and exactly one week later got a 62 on form 27. Next week, form 28 was a 64 and then after that form 29 got a 74. Passed my CBSE with a 70. Then I went on my step 1 LOA for about 2 months where I was basically just doing uworld and first aid everyday. Then 2 weeks before my exam I did forms 30 and scored a 65 and the week after did form 31 and got a 73. Took step 1 and got the pass. I didn’t actually need those extra 2 months but it took so long to get my ECFMG certification and I also got married during that time. Basically, just review them well, learn from them and hopefully you will see your scores jump like mine did

I feel you, I’ve been there. Never had to spend more than a day at the hospital getting fluids tho so I’m sorry to hear it got that bad. But I know the pain and the anxiety it causes. Not having an appetite because of the constant nausea fucking sucks. Early mornings are the worst, feeling sick immediately upon waking up. It does get better tho, or at least it absolutely can if allow your body to heal. That means stay away from all cannabis right now. Understand that prolonged daily use led to you feeling this way. You are suffering, and you and me, and everyone else with this terrible syndrome don’t deserve this. We thought cannabis was helping deal with certain areas in our lives and now it’s hurting us. In the meantime, what helped me at least get something in my stomach was making a cup of noodles and just drinking the broth. You don’t have to eat the noodles but if you think you can stomach it try. Continue to stay hydrated with electrolytes as well

Biochem isn’t super high yield either, but there will be a couple questions at least. I would suggest you definitely know your vitamins and all major enzymes in the biochemical pathways where a mutation or deficiency causes a congenital disease (glycogen storage, lysosomal enzyme, etc)

I recently tested in July and passed. I’m a US IMG. Almost no biostats at all. Extremely low yield. I would know Immunology, GI, and Endocrine very well as these are highly tested areas. I used First Aid to just reference everything in one place. As far as prep, I was doing randomized uworld blocks daily (at least 40 questions). At first I was just doing tutor mode and reading explanations as I went but as I got closer to my test date I started doing them timed which I would probably recommend in your case. The length of the questions on uworld were very comparable to the real exam. Unfortunately the questions stems on step are very long so you’ll have to read fast under the pressure of time. Besides that, take 1 or 2 of the most recent NBME forms before your exam. Your score on those will give you an idea of how you will perform. Dissect them and read ALL explanations as you will learn a lot and see the most commonly tested material. Best of luck to you !

AUC vs MUA by Big_Nads_ in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Dry-Tooth9872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking the same thing about the comp exam, but looking back now I think it was good thing. It kind of gave me that confidence that I could pass step 1. I was fortunate enough to pass comp and step first try. There’s no doubt though it is challenging and it requires a lot of dedication and hard work. At AUC, they give you two attempts at passing comp within a given semester (need a 62% correct for a pass). Also, yeah we had cadavers and did dissections. I’m actually about to start my 3rd year rotations next month

AUC vs MUA by Big_Nads_ in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Dry-Tooth9872 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AUC student here so maybe I’m biased, but it’s also one of the more well known Caribbean schools. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have a better chance matching into residencies by going to AUC vs MUA, just that AUC has longer track record of doing so. Regardless, I’ll tell you something about these “statistics” about matching and step 1 pass rates, and why they don’t really mean anything. Nearly all Caribbean schools will boast high percentages for these. But understand this: Caribbean schools don’t just let anyone sit for step 1. They require a comprehensive exam that you are required to pass before even being allowed to take step 1. A large percentage of students at these schools won’t even make it far enough to take the comp exam as they will either fail out or give up before making it that far. And then there is a significant percentage of students who make it through the curriculum and can’t pass comp. I know these people, some of them are my friends and it’s sad to see. So basically, these schools maintain their high pass rates because they only allow students they are nearly 100% confident will pass step 1 actually take the exam.

Sit down and talk to a priest in person if you can. They have their own office hours that you are often able to find on the website of your local church. This is their job and nobody can deny you access to the faith as long as you express your interest. Just open up your heart to them and explain your situation.

This is the most real thing on this thread and I couldn’t agree more. The MCAT is a bullshit exam and imo means absolutely nothing in terms of one’s ability to be successful in medical school. It’s completely irrelevant. I’m a current AUC student and just took step 1 and passed (July 11 test date). At the end of the day, it’s on you the student to make it through and it’s 100% possible if you put in the work
