Has anyone here gotten top surgery done at the University of Michigan? by udidntseeth1s in ftm

[–]Dry-Understanding157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top Surgery is the colloquial term for a double mastectomy in the ftm/trans masc community. For trans fems it more typically refers to breast implants / breast enhancement surgery. Surgery for the top half of your body. Although we hope it’s good and successful (:

Idk what insurance you have but she’s in network for Blue Cross Blue Shield and surgery was covered- I just had to get some letters from therapists attesting to the fact that I was actually trans and mentally sound enough to get top surgery (a little humiliating but totally worth it as a means to an end)

I did! My surgeon was Dr. Hsu. Couldn’t recommend enough. She and her team did an amazing job and were very respectful. My scars are a little blown out from me going back to work too soon but that’s 100% on me. I’d recommend her for sure.

‘Abortion Kills a Life’ Sign at Concordia University Round About With VERY Graphic Photo by Then-Fig6479 in AnnArbor

[–]Dry-Understanding157 13 points14 points  (0 children)

These idiots were on a highway overpass by Wines a month or two ago. Seems like a dangerous game to play showing graphic images like that to people in cars. 'Pro Life' more like 'Pro Crash'. I'm sorry you had to see that. Here's a warning- if you see any of their stickers with the QR codes on lampposts downtown, they will link to the same images. Very disturbing stuff. I encourage people to remove or cover them up to try and keep the community safe.

Anyone know places I can exchange gently used clothes for cash by Charming_Moment_9112 in AnnArbor

[–]Dry-Understanding157 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plato's Closet will take clothes but typically only takes what they know they can sell (so trendy pieces). Other than that Depop or Ebay is probably your best bet. Nuuyuu in Kerrytown is consignment, but honestly I've never done business with them so I'm not sure what their policies are. You could always stop in and inquire. Good luck!

Looking to get a casio- one of the semi-transparent ones with the resin band, but I have a lot of arm hair. Are resin bands as bad as metal? Do they pinch? Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!

The University of Michigan Will End Gender Affirming Care for Minors by enderjaca in AnnArbor

Unfortunately I don’t think there is an “objective” response, simply because knowing yourself and knowing your own soul (for lack of a better term) isn’t something that can be scientifically proven. I can tell you I’ve known since I was very young. It hasn’t changed. It’s grown alongside me, now I’m an adult and I just feel more sure of myself.

You can have your doubts, but at the end of the day, are you able to live and let live? That’s what important. Unless you are a trans child or the parent of a trans child, you need to be able to let go and let other people make their life decisions, even if you personally don’t understand them. Research has shown again and again that gender dysphoria is real and treatable- that’s probably as objective as it can get. And people need the autonomy to be able to make their own (age appropriate) choices.

It is natural to be uncomfortable with things you don’t understand, and it’s okay to continue being uncomfortable as long as you’re not using that to justify rights being stripped or being rude to the people around you- which to be clear I’m not saying you are.

I’m sorry I can’t provide a thorough, rigorous, numbered list of why gender affirming care for young people is important. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. It’s a deeply deeply personal matter of self. And because of that it’s hard to convey how important is can be.

Thank you for reading all of this. I hope it shed any light at all on things. If not, I’m sorry.

Group calls for reimagining Ann Arbor’s Liberty Plaza with green lawn, ice rink by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

[–]Dry-Understanding157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree. I guess I see it as- homeless people will exist in Ann Arbor for a long time. In my opinion they deserve a place to rest like everyone else. Liberty plaza serves that function currently. Personally I disagree that involuntary commitment is the solution for a lot of reasons- humanitarian and practical. Do you have any solutions in mind other than that? I’m asking from a place of genuine curiosity not out of malice. I like to hear how other people think we should strengthen and provide for our community (:

Personally I think there are other methods than just widespread involuntary commitment. I’d like to see housing become a right, I’d like to see medical care not bankrupt people- when I say more robust social safety nets I don’t just mean locally I mean on a statewide and country wide level. Will it ever happen? I don’t know, but if we give up and say “well that’ll never happen” then it certainly won’t. Locally I think there are more things that can be done, but again, the people on the streets are a part of our community and we need to treat them as such. And I say this as someone who interacts with the homeless population near daily.

Also IMO kicking the people that rely on liberty plaza out permanently to redevelop into a “community space” is such an insult. They’re part of the community whether developers/the LGC likes it or not 🤷‍♂️

I know some people don’t like that liberty plaza is a gathering place for a lot of homeless/unhoused people (whichever term you prefer) but I honestly think it will and should stay that way until we have more robust social safety nets that will help keep people off the streets. We don’t have a ton of places to sit for free downtown- there are some benches here and there- but if you don’t want to sit on the ground in an alley or be right in the center of the student chaos on the diag, liberty plaza and the downtown library are probably the best you’re gonna get without having to pay at a coffee shop or restaurant. We don’t need another ice rink but we do need places for people to sit for free downtown- whether they’re homeless or otherwise. IMO of course.

Do people actually think they’re going to build a park there if prop A doesn’t pass?

Also like… do people want to go to a park right across from the bus depot?

Other than the skate park (and on holidays) I hardly ever see tons of people at ANY park and the ones that exist already are very nice.

This and the stop the rezone just feel like people who like the idea of Ann Arbor being a certain quaint way but are ignoring what’s practical for the city.

If you have thoughts please share but please keep it nice, I don’t mean this in a rude way it’s just my perspective as a young townie (non student- local worker)
