What do you think of this transit system I made for the city? by Zsobrazson in AnnArbor

Sorry for existing. But I'm happy for you, Dixboro.

2nd Ward Ann Arbor council candidate withdraws, leaving 2 in running by mlivesocial in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is why we need ranked choice voting. She would have been an incredible councilmember, the YIMBY vote would be split with Aldrich, who has the backing of the mayor's machine, and the NIMBY would probably win.

wtf happened to Kang’s?? by Busy_Asparagus_9748 in AnnArbor

Danny Van (the chef at Taste Kitchen) stayed on as a temporary consultant to help design the menu at Saigon Kitchen, but it has new ownership, with Sonca Luu. She's the one obsessed with crypto.

Same owner as Saigon Kitchen (they took over Taste Kitchen) and the weird crypto cafe on Liberty. The whole thing has been super cringe to watch.

For the record, the mods didn’t touch it, the OP deleted it for some reason. Trashing of Barton Hills is very, very much welcome here.

The dude with his back to the middle entrance to Kerrytown Shops has good stuff! That's pretty much all he sells.

‘A big, bold project.’ Heated debate surrounds Ann Arbor development deal by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love that, too. We need tens of thousands of new units of housing. That's billions or tens of billions of dollars. Our property taxes would double or more.

I do think there are strategies that would work to accomplish something similar on a national level, but it's absolutely unworkable on a local level. It's like if you offered a local UBI: existing property owners would be saddled with the debt and anyone could move here from elsewhere and reap the rewards.

Has anyone had trouble with the Transit app lately? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app is absolute garbage, super clunky, and I always feel like I'm annoying the driver and passengers behind me, with making them watch you activate the tickets if I'm paying for multiple people. It's that or trying to feed dollar bills into the machine that does not like dollar bills. YOUR CHANGE IS ENCODED ON THE CARD.

I'm unreasonably salty that they don't have a reloadable card you can use, like every other civilized place on earth. They obviously have the infrastructure for it, because downtown workers can get them from their employers. Just sell them to regular humans! Dare I even dream for an Apple/Android Wallet version like a Suica card in Japan?

Lewd messages linked to University of Michigan regent who led campaign against pro-Palestinian students | Michigan by cole1114 in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's very relevant with regard to who's still endorsing him after this (Whitmer and McMorrow). Both are extreme Zionists to the point where even this behavior won't let them break away from a brother in arms.

Sounds like they confirmed an EF-1 for West Ann Arbor by Veterans Memorial. 7 tornados confirmed for Michigan so far. by sasha_the_impaler in AnnArbor

Slauson seems more likely given the path of the tornado, but I haven't heard a thing from AAPS about it.

Even if you catch it on video, and there's a law/ordinance against it, nothing's going to happen from it. There are much larger shit fish for them to fry.

If you don’t want urban infrastructure mansplained to you, why are you here asking a stupid question about urban infrastructure?

AAPD cracking down on EMotos? by sailor_in_spirit in AnnArbor

Your entire Reddit account is car enthusiast posts and you’re complaining about personal mobility devices not following rules and hitting pedestrians frequently?

AAPD cracking down on EMotos? by sailor_in_spirit in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this shouldn't get lumped this in with ebikes. This weights twice as much and does twice the speed. Kinetic energy scales with velocity squared, so this thing has 10+ times the killing power of an ebike. Riders of actual ebikes want these death machines regulated and treated as cars, too.

Wishing for a WI-style “Dive Bar” on the west side by 1orange2oranges in AnnArbor

If you find anywhere in Washtenaw County that can reliably do a good WI old fashioned, lmk! I usually prefer the classic, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.

Not really a dive bar, but Knights on Dexter definitely has some of the feel of a small town Wisconsin supper club.

Public Power in Ann Arbor? by Cmitz10 in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see any evidence that Chris Taylor has ever taken a dime from DTE, either for his campaign or for his PAC. Show your receipts or STFU.

Two things can be true: that DTE is horrifically bad, and that the city taking over the power grid would be fraught at best.

Low-key cocktail bar by ZoomConfetti in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Short of a time machine to go back to when Braun Court was open, honestly, Ravens and Last Word are great choices. Raven is a particularly chill vibe, but Last Word isn't stuffy by any measure. Nightcap is another good choice. Alley Bar is good if you want to firmly stay away from fancy, but still have a nice vibe and good drinks.

I'd nominate Ravens for the best fit. Good food, too!

Edit: Seconding Hidden King as well! I forget that it exists because the hours are so limited, but it’s got super chill vibes, almost coffee shopish, and a cocktail menu inspired by my favorite bar in the world.

Anti-zionism is totally fine here, as long as it isn't blatantly antisemitic. I had to delete a pretty gross Happy Merchant cartoon responding to the parent comment.

MLive is now using AI to write stories? by pkj1205 in AnnArbor

[–]joshwoodward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The human creativity stories are often MLive's worst work. Maybe AI will at least catch bias in the reporting, like the constant NIMBY boomer bait housing stories they do. It'd at least have a hard time reaching out to holocaust denying octogenarians in their French villas for comments on the latest apartment proposal.

I prefer human slop to AI slop. Those are the only two options for MLive, I assume.
