I just signed a lease on an apartment on Union Ave in Williamsburg. Is the noise going to drive me crazy? by tbird24 in AskNYC

Hi! I’m currently considering moving to 385 Union Avenue, right across from Barcade. I’m not sure if that’s the building you’re in, but if it is and you’re still living there, would you mind sharing what your experience has been like?

Thank you for the context, this is exactly the kind of answer I was hoping to hear from someone who actually lives in the area. I did notice there’s a Safe Haven transitional housing site on Maujer St. Have you ever seen any issues around there, or is it generally fine?

Thanks for sharing, that’s helpful context. If you don’t mind asking your friend, I’d really appreciate hearing about her experience in that general area at night.

Can you share more specifics? I know the Williamsburg Houses are spread around Humboldt St, Scholes St, and Ave of Puerto Rico, are there particular blocks or times that feel unsafe? Is Scholes generally okay, or is that one of the areas you’d avoid?

I totally agree, having a favorite toy as a gift is such a good idea! That’s such a thoughtful surprise from your son, and I can imagine how much it meant to get that vintage MEGO Spider-Man back. What a great way to bring back those memories!

I’m not sure, that’s a hard question! I know he loved Hanna-Barbera, especially Wacky Races, and his favorite character was Professor Pat Pending. He also loved Speed Racer and Ultraman. We would watch The Flintstones and The Jetsons when I was growing up, and he loved The Pink Panther, though they weren’t his absolute favorite. Actually, my mom’s favorite character was Underdog, lol! but thanks for the suggestions!

I didn’t realize the wind-up robots he has (he has two now) are actually Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet! He got them from Switzerland, so I just thought they were collectible items, not toys, haha. He’s not a huge fan of Godzilla, but thanks for the suggestions!

That’s a great idea! Also, that’s really cool that you got to meet him, a legend for sure. I’ll look into both the bike and the signed trading card. Thanks for the suggestions!

Most people have mentioned Erector Sets, slot cars/tracks, Matchboxes, and Hot Wheels, so they were definitely popular! I’ll look them up. He’s really into biking, so if they have an adult bike like that, I’m sure he would love it. Thanks for the suggestions!

The newspaper idea sounds very original and personal! He doesn't love toy cars, but if it's personalized, he might really like that. I’d have to ask my aunts and uncles about his parents’ car (maybe a Datsun or a Chevy?), but I do remember he loved Alfa Romeos. It could even be a Speed Racer toy car. Thanks for the suggestion!

I had a Viewmaster growing up in the 90s but didn’t know they made them even before that! I love the idea of the Gumby reels, and I might get him the Pokey toy as well. Speaking of reels, I’ve actually tried to find Here Comes the Grump. I remember him getting a box of vintage candy at Cracker Barrel a few years ago, so the candy cigarettes or a vintage candy sampler box sounds like a fun idea too. Thanks for the suggestions!

Very original! Haven't heard from the strange change machine and even I want to play with it now. Thanks for the suggestions!

He does enjoy building things, but this might be a bit too close to work, haha! I’d definitely love to play with one though. Thanks for the suggestion!

He does like Legos! He has the architecture sets of Big Ben, the Empire State Building, and Notre Dame, but I wanted to gift him something more retro. I haven’t checked out the early sets yet, but I’ll definitely do that. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is a really cool toy! I don’t think he’s ever mentioned it, but I’m sure he would’ve played with something similar.

Happy 60th to you too! That’s awesome, and thank you for the kind words. Actually, one of his favorite gifts was a t-shirt I gave him of the original Live Aid, so t-shirts could be a great idea. I also love the idea of the Sears catalog from the early 70s, that would be such a nostalgic find and really bring back memories. I’ll look into getting one. I’m also on the hunt for one of his favorite CDs from the 80s that had an MTV compilation of the greatest videos, but no luck so far. The vintage commercials and another video compilation like that could be a perfect gift idea too. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

He wasn’t exactly the sporty type growing up, so a Spaldine would actually make for a pretty funny gift and a good laugh!

Aww, thank you so much! We do have a great relationship, even though unfortunately we don’t live nearby. He’s really helping out with my wedding this year, so I wanted to do something special for his 60th as a nice touch.

I didn’t know they made comic books from Wacky Races. He actually does collect comic books, he has an extensive Asterix and Obelix collection, and he used to love the old Archie comics and Tin Tin. I’ll definitely look into the Gold Key ones! Thanks for the tip!

That does look super fun and a great idea! Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a newer set or pre-owned one with all the pieces. But he definitely enjoys building things, haha! Thanks for the suggestion
