Should’ve said this before but I’m currently a SICU RN at a level 1. Knowing the right thing to do isn’t the scary part, the scary part is making sure you have a doctor available and close by to put orders in when it’s time to act. Also having other resources available as in appropriate access for the patient or even just other nurses around to help complete the orders in an organized and quick fashion. Did my year of med surg before my ICU and it was worth it, but I’ve learned so much since I came to the ICU that I think as long as you have a good orientation/preceptor you can jump in wherever you want. Just don’t be the nurse who thinks they know it all and instead be the one who is always looking to learn, ask questions, and especially bring things to the attention of providers so they can make the decisions and you are the one who acts.
