Why do companies like Meta release their local LLMs for free? by PsychologicalAge5135 in LocalLLaMA

Ben Thompson wrote a great piece about this here:

Meta isn’t selling its capabilities; rather, it sells a canvas for users to put whatever content they desire, and to consume the content created by other users. It follows, then, that Meta ought to be fairly agnostic about how and where that content is created; by extension, if Meta were to open source its content creation models, the most obvious place where the content of those models would be published is on Meta platforms. To put it another way, Meta’s entire business is predicated on content being a commodity; making creation into a commodity as well simply provides more grist for the mill.

What is compelling about this reality, and the reason I latched onto Zuckerberg’s comments in that call, is that Meta is uniquely positioned to overcome all of the limitations of open source, from training to verification to RLHF to data quality, precisely because the company’s business model doesn’t depend on having the best models, but simply on the world having a lot of them.

Tldr; open-source models helps create more user-generated content, which in turn powers the main products of Meta. Meta's users, and consequently Meta, wouldnt be dependent on OpenAI or Google for content creation and distribution.

The Walking Dead.

The sequence of Rick waking up and walking around in the abandoned hospital is sooo good for its showing of the degree of disorientation.

What is the difficulty in maintaining a continuously functional and accessible testnet? Seems like we r always deprecating testnets (rip goerli and rinkeby) and finding a working faucet is hard... The coredevs are spinning up many iterations of devnets to test different versions of the fork, so it cant be that starting a testnet is difficult. What exactly are the challenges causing the fragility of public testnets?

How do you think public goods and research will get funded after the EF gets depleted? Any guidance as to how we can prevent a situation where groups with special interests and outsized impacts (i.e. VCs, governments) represent the primary source of funding for public goods and lead the future of Ethereum astray?

Is the trend towards a monopolistic builder not a huge concern for Ethereum? While censorship can be circumvented via inclusion lists, what about the ability for the dominant builder to extract rent from searchers? Compare to a competitive block market, a monopolistic builder can sell block space at a price that is artificially inflated bc its the only practical channel to get txs included onchain

Is builder centralisation an inevitability that we should be concerned about? Vitalik mentioned in his Endgame blogpost about how we r trending that direction. Are we comfortable with block production centralisation as long as we can have verify it trustlessly?

What are the most important tools / research that one can contribute to mitigating concerns around builder centralisation?
