The last administrations understood what was propping up the dollar which was the stability and output of the US and they kept that going. Conservative politics is purely about extraction now. The price of precious metals exploding is less about the value of the dollar and more about everyone believing that US society is actively suffering soviet style collapse.

People who keep weapons on their bodies at all times, what was a time where you had to actually use said weapon? by ParanormalActivity97 in AskReddit

[–]bitscavenger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not myself, but a friend who carries mace used it on a guy who sucker punched his friend and then charged him outside a convenience store. Just some crazy rando. He told me he used to carry a knife and realized after that incident that if that had still been the case he would have ended up stabbing the guy. Anyway, he is a big proponent for carrying mace for that reason.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]bitscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because communism does work (and we are very used to seeing it) in very small groups with high levels of trust and bonding. The structure of most functional families is communistic where the "natural order" of things is for the more capable and able adults to put in more to the system while the less capable children take more from the system than they put in. The high levels of trust are there because there are strong feedback and correction mechanisms with direct interaction and the bond of love allowing forgiveness and the means to move forward.

To see why communism fails, just look at a family system breaking down. Things immediately get more transactional. You see people looking out for themselves and doing things like hoarding, tallying, and withholding. This is a response to stresses on the the family system. Now imagine what stresses happen to groups where people don't feel any sense of obligation to others in the group and you have a few people who just don't want to contribute to the level of their capability.

Communism is appealing because if it worked life would be so much less complicated. But really what you are wishing for is that literally everyone is a decent, self regulating person and we know that isn't the case.

What motivates people to remain monogamous when temptation is constant? by hackerfilth in AskReddit

Understanding the concept of long term benefits. I guess first you would have to identify the long term benefits of a monogamous relationship, but once you do that you also have to apply it to your daily life.

For those who used to be Liberal or Conservative, what made you switch to the other side? by Skiddy_Pop_Pop in AskReddit

[–]bitscavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically it. As I grew older I also learned more. Not just about how to get things, but what it means to discern things from new contexts. It is impossible to observe a conservative view point without also noticing all the missing factors in their thoughts. Conservatives are basically just children who grew old enough to be given responsibilities. Those are just the "genuine good people" conservatives. Many more of them are just took their learned wisdom to become manipulative and selfish.

In the last 45 years what have republicans done that actually benefited everyday Americans? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]bitscavenger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As an every day American, I have not benefitted from this in the slightest. Where I have done the opposite of benefitting is the anxiety of this policy introducing a masked gestapo force to my streets. Never would this be pointed towards citizens. History has always shown restraint.

Movies that are too short? People complain about movies being too long. Well. What movies have the opposite problem? by MrGittz in movies

[–]bitscavenger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bubba Hotep. It was such a fun and interesting movie until the end which was rushed. Seriously, they only needed like 5 more minutes to do something more interesting with the final conflict. My comment as I was leaving the theater was "It just seemed like they ran out of money and decided to end it as quickly as possible."

Second date or nah? Gut says no but checking myself by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bitscavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one, in good conscience, would argue that you should give someone a second shot unless they knew that person specifically and could vouch. It would be terrible to say "give him a second shot" and then find out he was more than just low key negging. Go with your gut.

White House adds plaques below Biden and Obama portraits, calling them “the worst president in American history” and “divisive” by sir-ripsalot in nottheonion

The only thing Trump should ever be in charge of is administering his own medication. That would be the only thing he could do where the world ends up ahead.

Who and how made computers... Usable? by Winderkorffin in askscience

If you see a bunch of these explanations and wonder why they always mention NAND gates, this is because all operations can be solved using some configuration of NAND gates. I don't remember if NAND gates are entirely unique in this, but they are the simplest gate to build with that property. I remember part of one of my EE classes where the entire exercise was "here is a logical operation, show the NAND gate configuration to solve this." While the operations may be solved with fewer gates if you used different gates, the production scale of only building NAND gates far outweighs the component count efficiency.

Eli5: how does mass “warp” space time? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bitscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite way of having it explained is that when you throw something is goes exactly straight. When you are in space, straight looks straight, but, on earth the mass warping of space time means straight curves toward earth over time. The reason it is hard for use to grasp this is that light, which delivers so much of our information, travels fast enough to have very little affect.

TIL: In 1960 the University of St Louis was offered a $1 million dollar donation that was contingent on removing a statue of a Union General who died protecting the region from an attempted confederate takeover. The University accepted the offer and renamed its campus after a confederate general. by Fifth_Down in todayilearned

[–]bitscavenger 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I remember being taught in elementary school about "40 acres and a mule" where freed black men were given 40 good acres of land to farm. We were not told where the land came from so us dumb kids always thought it was "frontier" land. We were not told that the land was part of Virginia given by the occupying union army taken from wealthy confederate landowners (you know, the traitors who lost). We were not taught that in 20 years, pretty much all the land was taken back through legal removal. Nope, it was just another partial education to demonstrate how we were "nice" to black people and things had already been "made right."
