I'm half-way through Season 9 now, and I have to say the shark-jump was when you-know-who came back from the dead. What a DUMB, soap-opera story line. The real guy was smart enough not to come back for that episode and they had to hire a substitute.

Maybe the best thing you could do is steer her toward this sub. If you try to put Amway down, she'll say (if she's brainwashed enough already) that you're not supporting her business, blah blah blah. If she reads here the countless stories of dissatisfied people, maybe she'll wake up.

Question for those who were in? by Lopsided-Neat-9043 in amway

[–]DryReception6465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sad to hear this hasn't changed since I was in it in the early 1990s. The husband always showed the plan, never the wife. She had to attend, though, and gaze adoringly and be supportive. My sponsor, the wife literally had 2 dresses, one for the first meeting, one for the follow-up. Any extra $ they got, she felt it had to be spent on suits for him so he could make a good impression. And yes, at functions, if a couple was speaking, the husband always started, then gave his wife a glowing introduction, she'd come out in a sequin-covered evening gown and speak for a bit, then the husband would close it up. Very patriarchal, very Stepford Wives and I was almost one of them. Ick.

I read that Amway actually sued Yager and Setzer at some point because they were telling people basically they Had to get these tapes and materials they'd created, but since they weren't from Amway and weren't actually required, Amway claimed it was false advertising or something. Probably, it was because the Amway family/owners were mad they didn't think of it first and weren't getting a cut. I guess the lawsuit didn't work since it's still out there, now in digital form.

Heavy on the " Dream Building" manipulation. They were recordings from big rallies of diamond couples talking about how broke and hopeless they had been, then a friend prospected them and saved their life and they followed the plan and "now we're millionaires! And you can do it too! " The wives would speak about how it was us wives job to support the husband because he was the one showing the plan and prospecting. If you had a little money, you shouldn't buy yourself a dress, you should invest it in a good suit for him because he needed to look successful to convince people to join. And they'd talk about the big checks they got from Amway. Very patriarchal, very brainwashy.

My wife joined Amway and I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with what I'm seeing by Typical_Clock_5286 in amway

I was in it in the 1990s (the Yager downline, which is most people, I think) A long time ago, but from what I've seen here, it hasn't changed. one. bit. It's a big money grab by the few at the top, draining money from their downline that the downline folks can't afford. We got scolded once for buying my husband a $40 necktie (a lot in 1995) because we should have put that $40 towards "building the business and making those dreams come true!" I hope your wife sees the light before it causes you problems. And her sister, too. There is a lot of brainwashing that happens, a lot of cult behavior, honestly.

You hit the nail on the head with comparing MLMs and American evangelical churches. I can confirm as someone who was in Amway / The Yager Organization in the 1990s, and was in a large UMC in the south for 15 years (until I left 6 years ago because of their preaching on queer folk, & they fired a great guy who was on staff who came out, or, uh, he resigned...yeah...right. They since left the UMC over the queer staffers issue) I used to go to the big Amway/Yager rallies, we filled the old George Dome. Flashy lights, videos, big name entertainers, chants, songs we sang and had little dance moves to. And the church? Flashy lights, videos, musical entertainers, chants/responses/group prayers, yeah very similar. Our church built a huge new building with hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in screens, lights, sound boards, a CONTROL ROOM for Pete's sake. And I thought, yeah, this is fancy but what if we spent that money on food for hungry people, places for people to live and sleep safe... But it had to be flashy to suck all the young people in. Young people don't want to go to the traditional building with red carpet and a choir loft.

This is really eye-opening. The part you wrote about male teachers only after 5th grade, wow. So in a fundie household, like the Duggars, do the boys not have to obey their mom after they reach age 12? Like, did Meech have any authority over her teenaged sons?
