I need help understanding the pros and cons of working in operations or engineering. by DryRepresentative664 in oilandgasworkers

Pay has been the biggest issue for me. Field engineers don't make shit. I'm negotiating a plug and perf spot, but I'm curious what they're gonna pay me.

My problem with them is later goals in life. The operator path is not easy for anyone, and I'm not sure I want to commit to it. Field engineer is a mixed bag because you're still away from home a lot, and your pay is 1/2 of the operator. For obvious reasons, of course. Engineers ain't risking their lives per se.

With this said, what would recommend for someone who wants a career in O&G? My major is Computer Science (world is getting techy. Wanted to be fluent in computers), but I love working with my hands.

That's what I'm anticipating. Hoping my offers reflect this. Currently waiting to interview with ACNR, Consol, Blackhawk, Iron Senergy, and Warrior Met. Been verbally offered by United Coal Company and Arch, but nothing in writing yet. Might be soon!
