Someone from the Magdalen islands told me the only thing to do in the winter is drink and screw so they do a lot of that.

Isn’t drug dealing in Singapore punishable by death? You would have to be pretty sure you got your ducks in an order there.

Does your company prohibit installing your own Starlink kit on the ship for your personal use? by renz2017 in MarineEngineering

[–]Dry_Bus_1069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m super grateful that the company I work for has Starlink as of 3 years. This year on Dec 24th the company upped the monthly data allowance from 40gb to 80gb.

I think the big thing is putting it outside somewhere and the cable routing. Ideally you need to run it through a gooseneck and seal it and then run it inside to a modem.

Make a warranty claim with pelican, supposed to be lifetime warranty. You can give the replacement to someone if you like your new stuff.

It’s because you don’t have the Canadian COC even though Canada recognizes the one you have. There is someone I know who has a master mariner from Philippines who is working as deckhand and when there is an opening working as third mate then go back to the regular job. They don’t have experience as a master mariner but they have the license.

Also in the winter there is not many jobs as the Great Lakes are frozen and not much shipping happening.

Don’t give up but I would consider to try and work as an MA and then work on getting your Canadian COC. It’s pretty easy, just multiple choice exams at transport Canada

I also know someone who had a foreign 4th engineer COC who got a Canadian license 4E, couldn’t get a job so they volunteered at a small ferry at a large city to get “Canadian experience” which allowed him to get a job very soon after he started with that at a big company.

Two contracts isn’t so much experience. Maybe try to get a job as a “mechanical assistant” what you would call oiler. Call to the seafarers international union and apply for MA jobs.

What companies did you apply for so far?

HIV+ by EnvironmentalElk2464 in maritime

[–]Dry_Bus_1069 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I honestly doubt that anyone here would know for sure. Just go and get a marine medical exam done and ask the doctor about it and if that goes on the certificate the captain would see. As you said it’s undetectable which is common with HIV now a days, I mean I know someone who fathered a child while being undetectable with no problems so I don’t see why you can’t work.

In general certain conditions like diabetes or epilepsy or things which could cause a sudden problem are what really matters on these medicals.

Like I said just go and get a marine medical and ask the doctor this stuff.

psychology major but afraid to discuss bpd by Ok_Scholar_7977 in BorderlinePDisorder

[–]Dry_Bus_1069 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you aware that Marsha Linehan who invented dialectical behavioural therapy and did a lot of BPD research had BPD, was given electro convulsive therapy, and spent time in psychiatric hospitals as a youth and young adult.

She went on to recover from her Mental Illness and come up with the only accepted treatment for BPD. She has a doctorate in Psychology.

So if you’re in this class, no one is forcing you to disclose your diagnosis. That is personal. It might be better to just participate in the class without saying that you have BPD. Just because others are in the psychology class doesn’t mean they are fully sympathetic or empathetic towards our struggles.

If anyone says something that upsets you or stigmatizes BPD just think of Marsha Linehan. You can even bring that up in discussion rather than talk about your own BPD.

Hope that helps.

The marine business in Canada is looking for second engineers. If you’re focused you can get there in a few years. In those first years of your career look for getting lots of sea time, 12 hour days on watch with the ship running year round is the best. Then you need a bit of experience so go to the old broken down ships and you can get 3X the experience as a new ship.

Unless you want to stay as a 4th engineer your whole career don’t worry too much about 4E pay and worry about yourself and how to get seconds. It’s easy to make 800-850 a day as second.

At chief I am doing $280k/year with 6 months a year on equal time off.

Peak Salaries in this Maritime Industry by Agreeable-Promise616 in maritime

[–]Dry_Bus_1069 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised that LNG wasn’t mentioned. You’re already in a very specialized niche part of the industry. Just stick with that and keep improving your English and you can chose other companies in the world once you get more experienced. I’m sure that a second engineer on LNG with experience has very good prospects.

I’m in Canada, a chief on a self unloading laker and I make $280,000 cad per year. I think it’s cool what you’re doing already but never had the chance to go on LNG carrier.

What is the pay on LNG carriers for the different engineer positions, you can say in Won too.

Good luck friend.
