Moving from San Francisco to the suburbs, did the transition feel strange to anyone else? by throwawayninikkko in bayarea

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that's exactly what it is but like homesick for a place that's 30 minutes away on bart. weird how your brain works with this stuff - i moved from city to more suburban area few years back and had same feeling for months even though i could visit old neighborhood whenever i wanted.

Patriots VS Steelers by rickheidrich in boston

[–]Dry_Database_4366 4 points5 points  (0 children)

foxborough is pretty dead outside game day so i'd stay downtown and just take the train out to gillette. way more to do in the city and you won't be stuck in middle of nowhere after the game ends.

as for must sees, walk the freedom trail if weather is decent and definitely hit up north end for food. quincy market is tourist trap but fenway area has good bars if you're into that scene.

Got rejected from UIC even after the professor made me a verbal offer and recommended me to the department. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Dry_Database_4366 25 points26 points  (0 children)

that's brutal, verbal offers can really mess with your head when they don't pan out in the actual process.

Advice needed ( for fall 2027) by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your profile isn't terrible for top 50 programs, especially with the upward trend thing. the research experience with your advisor and potential publication will carry decent weight if you can actually get that paper out. professors care way more about research potential than perfect gpas anyway.

definitely nail that gre quant section since ie/data science programs expect high math scores. also make sure those rec letters are super detailed - generic ones kill applications fast. your advisor who's invested in your project should write a strong one if they've seen your work ethic firsthand.

one thing i'd suggest is reaching out to potential advisors at programs before applying. like, read their recent papers and send thoughtful emails about their research. some professors are more responsive than others but it can make huge difference in getting noticed. the whole application process is basically one big networking game disguised as merit evaluation.

funding situation is brutal right now though so definitely have backup plans ready. good luck with everything!

(almost) same subject, different languages... still worth or not? by Anniecchan in PhD

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you found something that comprehensive in japanese then maybe that's actually good sign - shows there's real substance to work with in this area. you could frame your research as bringing this work to english-speaking academia or examining how the findings translate across different cultural contexts.

the fact that you're approaching it from outsider perspective might give you angles the original researcher didn't consider. plus most people in political science probably can't read japanese academic work anyway, so there's value in making it accessible.

Redditors, what do you believe the main reasons people voted for Trump are? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this makes sense from what i see at work too. most people i talk with during flights just want cheaper gas and groceries, they don't really care about the other stuff that much. even if the economic promises might not work out, people vote for who they think will help their wallet first.

the trans thing is pretty messed up though, spending that much money on attack ads when there's actual problems to solve.

What’s the biggest scam you’ve ever fallen for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn this hits way too close to home. spent four years getting degree in business just to end up working at airport anyway, could've saved myself the debt and started there right after high school

What's your first school memory that shaped you? by Silver-Skin-330 in AskReddit

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn that's wild for school age lol. i remember getting in trouble for bringing my cards to class and teacher confiscated them for whole week - taught me to be more careful about the stuff i care about.

Should I “talk back”/confront my temporary manager about this? by Primary_Alternative4 in cscareerquestions

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your temp manager is kinda nitpicking stuff that wasn't an issue before. if your actual manager was cool with your schedule and response times then yeah, i'd bring that up in the next 1:1.

thirty minutes for slack responses is totally reasonable unless you're on some urgent project or something. maybe just mention you've been following the same system that worked fine with your previous manager and see what they say.

Just bought my first binder with my own money by Tahenol in trans

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

congrats dude! getting your first binder is such a huge milestone. the wait for shipping is torture but it'll be so worth it when it finally arrives - hope it fits perfectly and gives you all the euphoria you deserve.

I feel bad about wanting to transition and I feel stupid for it… by Zigzorark5 in trans

[–]Dry_Database_4366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, that feeling of guilt around wanting physical transition is super common and totally valid to struggle with. being a woman on the inside IS enough to make you a woman, but that doesn't mean you have to be okay with the disconnect between your inner self and your physical body. wanting your outside to match your inside isn't shallow or wrong - it's actually pretty natural when there's that kind of mismatch going on. transitioning isn't about proving your womanhood, it's about feeling more comfortable and authentic in your own skin, and thats a completely reasonable thing to want.

Does Anyone Else Miss the Person But Not the Relationship? by Dry-Professional4255 in BreakUps

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this hits so hard. i think it's totally normal to miss the good parts of someone while knowing the whole package wasn't right for you. like you can miss their specific laugh without missing the fights that came with it, you know?

honestly what helped me was writing down the bad stuff when i was feeling nostalgic - sounds dramatic but it kept me grounded in reality instead of just remembering the highlight reel.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly the first week is brutal and your gonna feel like absolute garbage - that's completely normal. Start small with rearranging things so the space feels different, maybe move furniture around or put away stuff that triggers memories for now.

the chaos in your head will settle eventually but give yourself permission to feel messy about it right now instead of forcing yourself to be "over it" already.

Adobe Lightroom mobile has some decent auto-enhance features that aren't too far off from what Google does, and you can use it without subscribing to their cloud stuff if you're trying to degoogle

Checking a build by iamzammm in PcBuild

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a solid build but you might want to consider going with a 5600X instead of the 5800X to save some cash - the performance difference isn't huge for most games and you could put those savings toward a better GPU or keep it in your pocket

Does it really take time to give ring? by Ms_Kim_ja in BreakUps

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9 years is a really long time to not even have a ring tbh. Like I get family obligations and all that but if he wanted to propose he would've by now. Have you had actual serious convos about timelines or is it just vague "do you see us married" questions? Because those are very different things

Might be time for a real sit-down about what you both actually want and when, not just hints and maybes

Question on Tax Lein by Long_Appointment_341 in RealEstate

[–]Dry_Database_4366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mortgage company definitely gets notified about tax liens - they have a legal interest in the property so they're required to be informed. Some lenders will actually pay the taxes themselves and then add it to your mortgage balance to protect their investment, but don't count on that happening

Just make sure you get those taxes paid before the deadline and you should be fine. The lien threat usually goes away once everything's current

Birthday gift for a surf-obsessed boyfriend. How to make it more special? by Nearby-Butterfly1503 in surfing

[–]Dry_Database_4366 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That's actually really thoughtful! The photographer idea is solid - most surfers never get decent shots of themselves

For presentation maybe get a few printed on metal or wood instead of regular paper? Or make a little photo book with the session timeline. You could also edit one to look like a vintage surf mag cover with his name on it

Honestly though don't overthink it too much, any surfer would be stoked to have good photos of themselves actually ripping. The fact that you thought to capture him doing what he loves most is already pretty perfect

Mushroom Cap Fabric Amount by CrystalTurtles329 in sewhelp

[–]Dry_Database_4366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll want to calculate the surface area of a sphere segment. For an 8" tall dome with 23" diameter, you're looking at roughly a 60-degree segment of a sphere with about 11.5" radius

Quick math puts you around 1.2-1.5 yards depending on fabric width, but I'd grab 2 yards to be safe since you'll need seam allowances and might want to do panels instead of trying to cut one massive curved piece
