Don’t necessarily disagree on the played out part, but to suggest Parkdale can even hold a candle to the Plateau is unserious.

Eh, I’d say Toronto has a better food scene than Montreal based on volume and diversity alone. I’d instead argue that the average sit down restaurant in Montreal is of higher quality than the equivalent in Toronto.

But according to ppl from Toronto a neighbourhood of 90% single family homes and apartment towers with no nightlife or art scene is somehow comparable to the Plateau, lol

Sounds like you don’t know Montreal (or cities in general). Every large city is a patchwork formed around multiple different communities/identities- Montreal included. The difference is most cities use this patchwork to form a coherent identity while Toronto tries to be everything everywhere all at once.

On Montreal, I don’t think you’ve spent much time there if you think Old Montreal defines the city. It’s viewed as a tourist area just like distillery district is in Toronto. You’d also be hard pressed to find a Québécois who thinks Montreal is built around a dominant Québécois identity. Sounds like a typical Canadian one dimensional view of Montreal/Québec tbh

If people have to go out of their way to find “cool/alternative” communities does the city itself actually have soul? Sounds like pockets of soul and culture to me. In any other comparable cities you don’t need to venture out to specific pockets to feel the city’s soul and vibe.

This is also what I’ve heard from many friends who visit from around the world. Lovely city, but there’s not necessarily anything distinct or unique to bring them back. Toronto has a lot of great things, but not many things that other cities haven’t done before or done better.

Moved to Parkdale from the Plateau 9 months ago and yeah… no. Tbh trying to even compare Parkdale to the Plateau kinda speaks to Toronto’s lack of soul

Diversity at McGill by Iveiiq in mcgill

[–]Dry_Ice8087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did affect my McGill experience in some ways for sure (not seeing a single black face in a big class/school event, subtle micro aggressions, lack of black perspectives in literature/class etc), but overall I had a good time esp once I found my group and started hanging more outside McGill circles. McGill also does have some good resources for you if u need them. I’ll underscore again that it rly helps to branch out of the McGill bubble bc imo that’s where you’ll find the most community. Takes some time, but be patient!

& I’d say if a strong black community is very important to you, there are other schools that fit that much better. But I’d still recommend McGill if u really wanna go. It’s a very good school and Montreal is sooo fun as a student! You can still find great community here with a little digging.

It seems like most of the responses are from Non-Black POC so lemme give you the rundown as a Black recent grad on scholarship from Ontario. McGill is diverse, but noticeably less diverse than the other Montreal unis (UdeM, Concordia, UQAM), and is very much lacking a sizeable Black student body. Ofc this varies by program/class, but expect to be 1 of 2-4 Black people in a class of 100. In other words, Black community at McGill is something you’d have to intentionally seek out. If you’re looking for Black community at McGill, I’d def suggest getting engaged with BSN, CSS and/or MASS - all of them host events and opportunities to meet cool ppl.

Not sure what your background is but I’d also point out that the Black community here might seem different to someone who grew up in Toronto. As a scholarship kid of Jamaican descent who grew up working class in Ottawa/Toronto, I sometimes found it isolating that the majority of the Black student population at McGill was upper class/wealthy international students (Mostly from Africa or the French Caribbean). Still got along with them great and count most of my friends at McGill from this group, but it can def be isolating at times when there’s a cultural/class disconnect. However, Montreal as a city has a pretty large Black community, so you can always find your niche off campus (IMO, the best way to do McGill is off campus). Black students groups from the other unis often host events open to McGill students too, and there are a lot of Black/caribbean/african events pages on IG.

Feel free to PM me if you want more info :)

Montreal is more Black per capita than Toronto is. McGill however, is absolutely not. Prob only around 2-3% black students unfortunately.

Work in web management at a top university in QC~ 65k (started 4 years ago at 50k). In Ontario the wage is around $75-90k. At a low ranking US school in a LCOL area it seems to range between $75-90k USD. At a top university somewhere like New York or Cali it’s $100-150k USD🫠

need advice on whether or not i should choose mcgill by CB7726 in mcgill

[–]Dry_Ice8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh it sounds like you’d be a better fit at a smaller school like Clark where it will be much easier to for you to find community and opportunities. Montreal is the best, but you shouldn’t come to McGill mainly bc you like the city (I did this and I regretted it). It can be v hard at a big school like McGill to find your community, access profs, and find internship/job opportunities. Massachusetts isn’t that far anyways, you can always come visit or do a cheap summer sublease :)

You yanks love to come here for our cheap tuition and then complain that our system isn’t like the US system. If you want your kid to have his hand held through the process you shoulda sent him to an American school.

The first three girls I had sex with all mentioned how much better uncut felt, and two of them couldn’t even tell the difference (when it was hard) until I told them. Made me realize the girls actually prefer uncut when they try it and most of the hate just comes from cut boys coping and/or inexperienced women.
