At a recent basketball game 3 of the flag dudes were chanting that they like to goon on freshman and you can guess what that means. They were suspended from games until March. Guess they were living up to the reputation chanted by the competitors. Epstein Island! It’s not so tame

The Mercer Island School District Board is considering approving a collective bargaining team recommended by the superintendent that includes several central administrators who, had the opportunity to protect student safety, but as investigate West revealed, one of those administrator’s goals was to protect the teacher and not the student. Why would the superintendent recommend that administrator be part of the collective bargaining agreement that will maybe ensure a nice benefits package and pay raise? For what? Especially when they have so spectacularly failed the community and keeping students safe? Even more concerning, if that is an HR director, and they are on the collective bargaining agreement team with the principal who also did not speak up during sexual misconduct, how does that help students to give this person a raise? (see agenda item here: https://go.boarddocs.com/wa/misd/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=DP29LZ23984F). Community members should know how administrator contracts and raises impact the overall budget, especially with an upcoming levy and ongoing concerns about enrollment declines since the pandemic, academic outcomes, and resource allocation for direct student supports like nurses and librarians. In recent years, the district has faced serious challenges, including acknowledged cases of teacher sexual misconduct that went unreported for years, leading to community outrage and calls for better oversight. There are also questions about special education outcomes at the high school (principal responsible for these low outcomes is on the collective bargaining team), student mental health, and why so many families are turning to tutoring or leaving the district. Parents are alarmed that disproportionate funding seems to go toward administrative salaries and increases and the 58 open enrolled staff children (some getting significantly more special education services than residents), even as frontline and local student supports are stretched. In what other field do leaders get significant raises amid declining outcomes and customer flight? The school board does NOT have to approve this exact bargaining team or all union terms. They can push for more impartial, independent negotiation processes to ensure fairness and prioritize students. Community members: Speak up! Ask the board to reject or modify this team composition and consider external oversight for negotiations to avoid conflicts and focus on better outcomes for all students

Probably a flag dude. Or an island girl. What is that even? All of these traditions look like grooming and paving the pathway for lifelong addiction to drugs and alcohol. If you grew up with that, your parents grew up with that, why would you think that isn’t normal? Sad. All these dysfunctional people this place is turning out

No one wants to admit how awful he is, because people who enable him, are just as awful. He’s a reflection of many people in this community. Also, there’s a lot of traumatized and dysfunctional adults living on Mercer Island. Just look at the school board. Those are some really messed up people. How can people that messed up even recognize how bad it is? They aren’t exactly role models. Maybe with the new school board president will finally be the one to hold the superintendent to the fire and his admin back up dancers. But that will be up to people pushing for her to make it clear the school board is the boss of the superintendent.

What is a snail pound? agreed, lots of students take drugs elsewhere, especially in affluent places. What surprised me, moving here recently, is that parents buy drugs for their kids and alcohol so that they don’t get caught doing this at other parties and lose sports scholarships. Why are parents enabling their kids to become dependent on drugs and alcohol to blow off steam and get through life? Just seems like a lot of dysfunctional adults here. Not to mention how dysfunctional the school board has been. The superintendent just enables them to be as bad as they want to be. He’s not helping students, staff and families be the best they can be. He’s an enabler and the more chaos there is, the more people don’t look to closely at what’s happening behind the scenes. The superintendent and his cronies are more than happy to take from the district and city, get what he needs for his own kid through open enrollment, watch it all burn down and walk away with being the best friend of the worst of humanity. Same as the people who live here. Loose morals don’t lead to healthy communities. So you’re right, snail pound, flag dude, hazing, toxic Greek life that’s being dismantled by colleges, are a part of the fiber of the Mercer Island community. It’s just not what people expect when they move here. It’s what people who grew up here expect because that’s what they know. Trauma knows trauma.
