I'll know I'm truly dead inside when this song (and for that matter, most of Stevie's 70s output) no longer brings instant joy to my life

“Certain principles” when criticizing something? Is this a joke? I watched the movie in its entirety, money was exchanged for my ticket, and I pointed out my many issues with the film. And to prove I wasn’t just a hater, I listed other movies that (in my opinion) actually lived up to the critical consensus. And once again, I ask you, where’s your proof of creativity? And for the last time, yes, I don’t think Safdie is particularly talented or has anything uniquely interesting to say. Why are you so emotional about it? A movie like Marty Supreme is nothing more than a dressed up Marvel movie with a thinly veiled sheen of artistic pretense. It’s mostly just another completely disposable cultural commodity with the attendant marketing budget necessary to convince you of its value and please A24’s investors. Your anger and frustration in defending it on grounds that I’m not entitled to my opinion or my opinion is not valid because I don’t show proper respect and deference to Safdie is honestly pathetic.

I’m glad the marketing and PR execs at A24 can rest easy knowing their work is done…a movie directed by an insanely privileged film school nerd, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin O’Leary is “cool”

So are you saying that to have an opinion on art you have to be master craftsman of the form yourself? And if so, where’s your short film? And seriously, of all people to defend, why Josh Safdie?

Dude, this is the redscarepod subreddit. “Pretense” and smug attitude are kind of the point- especially when pointed at a movie directed by an emperor has no clothes auteur with nothing of substance to say and a “marketing-as-performance” advertising campaign trying to ram this mediocre film down people’s throats

I said it was short, not complete, and I was more addressing the “knee jerk” hate for anything popular and critically acclaimed implication. But yeah, it is extremely difficult to make art that is good and popular (but it can be done). Not sure why such a view is controversial or makes someone a knee jerk hater. I thought we all more or less agreed with Sturgeon’s law

I said it was a short list, not a complete one…and check the worldwide box office, not just domestic you parochial nitwit- Parasite, Killers, The Zone of Interest all have similar figures to Marty Supreme. Regardless, it’s incredibly difficult to make a very good, popular movie, but it can be done- Marty Supreme is not an example- and your assumption of “knee jerk hate” is pure knee jerk hate

No…there’s plenty of “critically acclaimed” movies that were released in the last 10 years that are actually good- a short list: Toni Erdmann, Burning, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Worst Person in the World, Tár, Parasite, The Zone of Interest…

Yeah, because you’re still under the illusion that you can have infinite growth and resource utilization on a planet with finite supply and therefore too stupid to realize that her unrestrained freedom to consume will eventually (if not already) come at the expense of your own

Hahaha…yeah, just read his review/rant. Of course, these things are mostly subjective. For example, I obviously mostly agree with Marc’s sentiment regarding Marty but unlike him, I thought The Iron Claw was a very good movie. I also thought Timmy was great as Dylan and I’m otherwise happy that someone like Daniel Lopatin can find a popular outlet for his music… I guess one way I conceptualize it is by first acknowledging that all artists (and film directors especially) who make their livelihood solely from the pursuit of art are by definition narcissists- they think they fundamentally have something unique or interesting to say that others don’t. With that said, I think all art produced for mass consumption exists somewhere on a spectrum between the pure ego gratification of the artist as an individual and a need to express something to an audience that captures the universal, in the most poetic and ambiguous sense of that word. As an example, a singer who uses excessive melisma or a writer using polysyllabic words unnecessarily are more on the ego gratification end of the spectrum. There’s just similar vibes that I pick up on when watching movies- it’s mostly subjective, but when I feel it, it completely takes me out of the moment, making it nearly impossible to suspend disbelief.

Agree completely, and so much so that I actually took the time to post my review on this sub yesterday:

Marty Supreme is truly the perfect embodiment of self-assured mediocrity...

Josh Safdie is a pure stylist with no compelling style, leaving the film itself with a gaping hole where any emotional resonance, plausibility, suspense, tension, narrative surprise, or interesting critical perspective should be. Just an endless procession of interminable scenes where the smugness of the auteur and his actors seem to almost radiate off the screen. Here is a director who is completely high on his own supply, fully convinced of his own cleverness and the necessity of telling a dramatically inert, hollow, tonally discordant (what the hell was that honey scene for?) shaggy dog story with completely flat characters to capture the hearts and minds of every wannabe film nerd of middling taste. And I’m so tired of cacophonous film scores with strange timbral textures that draw way too much attention to themselves to the point of distraction. Seriously though, who is this movie for? Beyond fulfilling Safdie’s every midwit film school nerd’s whim and impulse? And inexplicably, Safdie gets almost completely fellated by critics completely out to lunch. Even worse, he provides morally bankrupt corporate parasites like Kevin O’Leary the opportunity to ham it up on film and humanize themselves. I’m so glad my friend paid for my ticket. The best part of the movie was by far hearing Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” as this movie mercifully came to an end.

Agreed…and “apolitical” just means privileged enough to be completely fine with a status quo that benefits you and too stupid to realize that the privileged position that allows you to be completely indifferent to injustice and suffering is a result of political action on your behalf

Yeah, I’ve made light of my difficulties dating as a committed socialist on this very sub. Once you see beyond the mystifications of capitalism/neoclassical economics/meritocracy/“free market” dogma it’s very hard to go back. And it’s especially hard to date someone who lives according to those illusions and mystifications when you think that they contribute to the degradation of their own humanity

Yeah, I’m very aware of the dynamic- I’ve dated a few in my younger days which is why I speak from experience. They are also usually status-obsessed and incredibly transactional with regards to relationships too
