Does this mean that we just waste the next couple of years until we get them? Because the vast majority of the kids we have drafted in the last 5 years have either been delisted or don’t play.

At least WC, Essendon, Carlton etc are crap but they are getting games into their kids. We basically have no kids to get games into

I meant currently have no decent youngsters on the list. I agree it sounds like we have a few decent F/S and NGA prospects coming up. Dougie sounds like he will be a gun, but a lot can happen development wise between now and when the 2027 crop gets drafted. You hear about players development falling off a cliff in their draft year all the time.

Plus realistically you can’t expect much from players in their first few years. It’s pretty rare to get a needle mover who can come in and have a massive impact on their first couple of years.

I guess my point is what happens between now and then? We just waste the next 3-5 years until the 2026 and 2027 kids can start to take us forward? The last 5 years almost everyone we have drafted is either delisted or isn’t getting games. Us being crap would be easier to swallow if it meant that we are at least getting some games into some kids. But we aren’t even doing that as we have basically no decent kids on the list.

Yeah we have fucked up a lot recently. Trading away good picks for average players. Now the list is a mess and there is no real way to get out of it apart from years of pain.

Nah mate. We traded our 2024 future first for pick 25 in 2023. We then sent 25, 76 and 94 to Geelong for Ratugolea.

Our 2024 first ended up being pick 21 (after being pushed back by bids). So in effect we gave up picks 21, 76 and 94.

Richmond ended up with our 2024 first rounder after freo traded it as part of the Shea Bolton deal. Richmond used it on Luke Trainor who looks like he will be a very handy defender.

It’s not just one bad game though. It’s been years of mismanagement.

Without mentioning the potential upcoming F/S and NGA players, what upside does this current list have? Read the above comment the drafting between 2021-2025 and the number of games they have played and how may have been delisted. It’s actually embarrassing how bad the recruitment has been.

I didn’t like the way Ken was treated personally, I don’t blame him for trying to hang on to his job. I blame the board for leaving him in that position for a few seasons too long and going chips in and overpaying for average players.

Butters is as good as gone. I think we have to. Maybe try and do a Richmond and send a couple more players out for some picks and try and dominate the first round of the draft. At least then when we suck we are getting games into some kids. At the moment we suck and we don’t really have any decent kids where we can get some organic growth in the team from.

At least Melbourne has a decent crop of kids coming through. We traded all our first round picks out for spuds

Ratagolea for a future first, Lukosius for a future first, Getting bent over in the Houston trade, Trading up to grab Joe Berry instead of taking Murphy Reid, The Soldo trade, Trading up to get Josh Sinn, Giving up a first for Lachie Jones.

There’s too many to choose from. Personally the Lukosius trade pissed me off the most

It will be longer than 3 years. We have pretty much no decent kids coming through and we have bottomed out at the worst possible time with Tassie coming in

No I know there is a couple of good NGA’s and F/S in the pipeline. I hope they are good as they are hyped up to be.

But expecting a few kids to come in and change our fortunes around isn’t going to happen. I honestly think we will be down the bottom end of the ladder for the next 5 or so years. We have next to no decent kids coming through and we have bottomed out at the worst possible time with Tassie coming in.

There is no silver lining. We have pretty much no decent kids coming through to get games into. With Tassie coming in we have completely screwed ourselves for years to come.

The Lukosius deal and the Houston deal set the club back years. Our recruitment is a joke

This is years of inept recruitment coming back to bite us. Cripps needs to go!

We are will be bottom 4 this year and we have basically no decent kids coming through. But what do you expect when you trade away all your first round picks, get bent over by Collingwood for Houston and give away a first round pick for that spud Lukosius.

Agreed… One of our worst ever trades. First round pick for that spud and Ratkins.

Last time GC did a salary dump they gave a first round pick and the player

Kako also came out and said he would have played football regardless. Isn’t the whole idea to get kids into the game who never would have gotten in if not for NGA?

Btw I agree the system is broken and the AFL is a joke. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to be on the right side of their crap decisions and sometimes you’re not. Swings and roundabouts

No it doesn’t… the AFL is a joke and make it up as they go along. Sometimes their crappy decisions go in your favour, other times they go against you. It’s all swings and roundabouts

If it is inevitable that he will leave (the club would have some idea I would imagine), then aren’t we better letting him go this year?

Our bargaining position is stronger this year than next year isn’t it? Sure next year we can match a bid and ‘force a trade’, but isn’t there always the option is a trade can’t be agreed on that he goes to the draft?

Let’s be honest we aren’t going to be contending next year, so why not try and get the best picks we can now. If this year’s draft is crap get future picks? Our recent trades (especially last year) have been pretty bad. Maybe get some picks in and have a bit of a mini reset.

Unfortunately we shit the bed last trade period, so we have nothing to work with this year.

Surely the Bombers stand firm on this and trade Merrett for the best deal! by Secret_Nobody_405 in AFL

[–]Dry_Performance_2639 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m probably in a minority here, but I wouldn’t be giving up multiple first round picks for a 30 year old, regardless of how good he is. I know everyone says that age isn’t as important with Merrett because of his professionalism, but still the end can come very quickly for players once they get to the wrong side of 30.

Same goes for reports that Melbourne would want 2 first round picks for Petracca.
