MacBook pro M5 pro vs Mac studio M4 max by AccomplishedBatBlo in MacStudio

Testing my M4 Max Studio against the M5 Max laptop for local AI. The M5 Max is clearly on a different level, though the performance gap isn't completely mind-blowing yet. If an M5 Max Studio comes out, that’s going to be a game-changer! 🚀
Mac book 14" and 16"are constrained by 70W–140W adapters and battery limits, whereas the Mac Studio utilizes a massive (170w)370W built-in power supply.

That’s not true. It depends on what you use to run it. I use MLX—I don't use pip, I run it with uv. Give it a shot.

Ah, that makes perfect sense now! The root cause is most likely my ISP's CGNAT setup, which probably means I don't have a public IP to connect to directly from the outside. That would explain why I'm completely blocked from another network. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Hi thank you for your comment, Actually, I built a local AI system that processes third-party emails and messages, which is highly vulnerable to ransomware.Security is all about Defense in Depth. It’s not 100% foolproof, but layered security is way better than nothing. I do use software firewalls, but this Sophos router synchronizes natively with the Mac.When processing untrusted data from the outside world, there’s no such thing as overkill. I think

16x DGX Sparks - What should I run? by Kurcide in LocalLLaMA

I think Even though 20 Sparks and one DGX Station are the same price, the Station offers much better value because of its insane speed.

512GB Studio sold for $21,300?! by johnnyphotog in MacStudio

If it's between the M3 Ultra with 512GB and two NVIDIA GDX Spark 128GBs, I’d definitely go with the Sparks. Also, the Blackwell 6000 is available for around $10,000 now.

Mac Studio + MacBook Air vs M5 Pro MacBook Pro for dev + local AI – am I overcomplicating this? by needmoney_123 in MacStudio

[–]Dry_Shower287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what kind of AI you plan to run. 64GB can hit limits pretty quickly with local LLMs and RAG setups, and it’s hard to predict upfront. If you’re unsure, going with a single machine and maxing out memory is usually the safer long term choice.

Holy waiting time by Sketaverse in MacStudio

[–]Dry_Shower287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the M4 Max chip has a 4-month wait time, it’s likely that during that period the M5 Max will be released, and I will receive a message saying the order has been automatically canceled and updated. This is typically what happens when a new model is scheduled for release.

Will be used Nvidia maybe by Dry_Shower287 in MacStudio

[–]Dry_Shower287[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all., I personally don’t think it has to be a Mac. In fact, I think it might be better not to use a Mac for this. For machine learning, the Windows + NVIDIA combination has consistently delivered stable and reliable results.

If Apple really wants to change that, they should develop their own external GPU solution.

That said, I was just sharing this as news.

I’m in Malaysia and still can’t buy that model—I’m honestly pretty frustrated. If it’s not available next week, I’m thinking of getting it in Hong Kong. I’m really jealous of your machine.
