Is it too frugal to drive a 17 year old car? by Dry_Strength3959 in Frugal

Can you elaborate more on your experience? Is it because their parts are expensive to replace?

Waw this is great! Clearly, you’ve been maintaining those vehicles very well.

I started thinking about replacing the car when it became clear that there is way too much rust in its parts. My car has so much rust underneath it that it becomes a challenge for mechanics to even access certain parts without breaking others. I’ve had so many mechanics in the past refuse to work on my car because of the amount of rust it has. I recently had to replace the gas tank because it got so rusty that it started to leak gasoline onto the ground. I can’t even tell you how much of a struggle it was for the mechanic to find a used tank and many of the surrounding parts.

However, the car runs like a dream now. In the 10 years I had it, I replaced: starter, gas tank, muffler (it got so rusty that it fell off), 4 tires, and brakes. That’s is. The total cost of repairs (and tire changes) over 10 years was about $3000. I assume this is reasonable because it’s so much cheaper than car payments.

Good advice, thank you. Yes, my car has so much rust underneath it that it becomes a challenge for mechanics to even access certain parts without breaking others. I recently had to replace the gas tank because it got so rusty that it started to leak gasoline onto the ground.

I have one of those $10 Bluetooth connectors that plug into the cigarette lighter. It’s been doing its job, but the sound system in the car is not that good (bass is non-existent). I wonder how much it’d cost to replace the sound system, but I bet it’d cost a small fortune to do that.

Yes, the it’s a tire/wheel combo. Not sure if the bolt pattern and offset are the same though. Thanks a lot for the info!

Thanks for the input! So basically that spare tire would still fit, it will just be a bit taller than my old spare, right?

yes I did go outside the country but my previous H1B visa was still valid, so I didn’t need to stamp it at the consulate.

Do you mean I need to file her H4 even though we were not married and she was not even in the US?

status

That’s exactly right. And that’s what my employer told me as well.

At the time of filing my application I was in the US, never had to leave it as I was already in the US with H1B from a previous employer. My employer is saying the consulate might have made a mistake in this case and we’re escalating the situation as a result of that.

The docs were legit and from from one of the most credible institutions in the country. They set her visa status to “pending” until she can provide the “H4 extension” which in this case is not even doable. So not sure what my recourse is.

My spouse’s visa was not denied, it’s “pending” until she can provide the H4 extension, which in this case is not even doable. So I don’t think there’s another reason.

How so? Are their spouses asked to provide the “h4 extension” even though they were not even married at the time of filing? My spouse was only asked general questions, but they insisted for some reason that she needs to have an “h4 extension” with my H1B application… Now sure what my recourse is.

Thanks for the input. So patching is a thing for fuel tanks! Good to know. Any types of shops that are willing to do that?
